{"id":10360,"date":"2023-10-20T10:49:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T10:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/20\/canada-removes-41-diplomats-from-india-as-dispute-over-sikh-activists-assassination-deepens\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T10:49:33","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T10:49:33","slug":"canada-removes-41-diplomats-from-india-as-dispute-over-sikh-activists-assassination-deepens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/20\/canada-removes-41-diplomats-from-india-as-dispute-over-sikh-activists-assassination-deepens\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada removes 41 diplomats from India as dispute over Sikh activist\u2019s assassination deepens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Canada has withdrawn 41 diplomats and their families from India after New Delhi threatened to revoke their diplomatic immunity amid a deepening dispute over the assassination of a Sikh activist.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The move follows a series of tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions between the two countries following the June killing of Canadian citizen and prominent Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was gunned down by two masked attackers in British Columbia.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      A rift between the countries opened up after Canadian leader Justin Trudeau claimed his intelligence services were pursuing \u201ccredible allegations\u201d that the killing was potentially linked to agents of the Indian government. India has vehemently denied any involvement in Nijjar\u2019s death and called the claims \u201cabsurd and motivated.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In addition to the tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions, India has suspended visa services for Canadian citizens over what it says are \u201csecurity threats\u201d against diplomats in Canada.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Last month India indicated it would ask several Canadian diplomats to leave the country, in a bid to establish diplomatic \u201cparity.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Commenting on the withdrawal of the 41 diplomats on Thursday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly said India\u2019s recent actions had been \u201cunreasonable.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThe safety of Canadians and of our diplomats is always my top concern. Given the implications of India\u2019s actions on the safety of our diplomats, we have facilitated their safe departure from India,\u201d Joly told a press conference in Ottawa.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Joly said those diplomats and their families had already left India while 21 Canadian diplomats remained in the country.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Joly added the Canadian government would not retaliate in kind, saying that to do so would be a violation of international law.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThe only thing we\u2019re encouraging India to do is respect international law,\u201d Joly said.  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    Who was Hardeep Singh Nijjar?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Nijjar was an outspoken supporter of the creation of a separate Sikh homeland that would include parts of India and be known as Khalistan.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      According to the World Sikh Organization of Canada, Nijjar often led peaceful protests against what the advocacy group called the \u201cviolation of human rights actively taking place in India and in support of Khalistan.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The Khalistan movement is outlawed in India and considered a national security threat by the government \u2013 a number of groups associated with the movement are listed as \u201cterrorist organizations\u201d under India\u2019s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Nijjar\u2019s name appeared on the Home Ministry\u2019s list of UAPA terrorists.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In 2020, the Indian National Investigation Agency accused him of \u201ctrying to radicalize Sikh communities across the world in favor of the creation of \u2018Khalistan,\u2019\u201d adding that he had been \u201ctrying to incite Sikhs to vote for secession, agitate against the government of India and carry out violent activities.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Nijjar\u2019s supporters have rejected the terrorist label, which they say is being used to discredit Nijjar, whose death both shocked and outraged the Sikh community in Canada, one of the largest outside of India and home to more than 770,000 members of the religious minority.  <\/p>\n\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada has withdrawn 41 diplomats and their families from India after New Delhi threatened to revoke their diplomatic immunity amid a deepening dispute over the assassination of a Sikh activist.
