An aide to the commander-in-chief of Ukraine\u2019s military was killed after receiving a live grenade as a birthday present that was immediately detonated by his 13-year-old son. <\/p>\n
Major Gennadiy Chastyakov, who served as the assistant to Valery Zaluzhny, had received a gift box from a colleague for his birthday on Monday that contained several \u201cWestern model\u201d\u00a0grenades, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote on Telegram. <\/p>\n
Chastyakov\u2019s 13-year-old son then picked up one of the\u00a0grenades and started turning the ring,\u00a0Klymenko wrote. As\u00a0Chastyakov took the\u00a0grenade\u00a0from him, the ring was pulled out and the weapon detonated. <\/p>\n
Zaluzhny, the chief of Ukraine\u2019s military, wrote on Telegram that his \u201cassistant and close friend\u201d died \u201cunder tragic circumstances.\u201d <\/p>\n
Police found five more unexploded\u00a0grenades in the apartment, Klymenko said. <\/p>\n
Kyiv regional police reported that the assistant\u2019s son was seriously injured by the explosion, and is being medically treated. <\/p>\n
According to Klymenko, police identified the \u201cfellow serviceman\u201d who gave the gift to Chastyakov, and found two similar\u00a0grenades during a search of his office. <\/p>\n
Police said criminal proceedings had been initiated and an investigation is ongoing, though the Ukrainian interior ministry later said it considers the death an \u201caccident\u201d based on preliminary information. <\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to the information we have now, we can say that it was an accident, negligent ammunition handling,\u201d Mariana Reva, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior said on national TV. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is possible that the case will be reclassified based on the evidence collected.\u201d <\/p>\n
The gift\u00a0\u201cwas in the form of a box, with a bottle of alcohol and six\u00a0grenades inside,\u201d Reva said. <\/p>\n
She said that the colleague \u201cpresented these\u00a0grenades to a colleague, pointing out that the\u00a0grenades were combat\u00a0grenades.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, the deceased did not take these words seriously,\u201d Reva added. <\/p>\n
Klymenko assisted Zaluzhny as the military chief led Ukrainian troops in the war with Russia. <\/p>\n
\u201cFrom the beginning of the full-scale invasion, (Gennadiy) was a reliable shoulder for me, completely devoting his life to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the fight against Russian aggression,\u201d the military chief wrote on Telegram. <\/p>\n
The assistant had a wife and four children; in addition to the son\u2019s injuries, his daughter suffered minor injuries, according to Reva. <\/p>\n
Zaluzhny has in recent days found himself in a public difference of opinion with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, who disputed his commander-in-chief\u2019s characterization of the state of the war. <\/p>\n
Zaluzhny told the Economist that \u201cwe have reached the level of technology that puts us into a stalemate\u201d and \u201cthere will most likely be no deep and beautiful breakthrough,\u201d comments which Zelensky\u2019s office quickly pushed back against. <\/p>\n\n
