Hunter Biden\u2019s attorney asked House Speaker Mike Johnson to stop House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith from \u2018continuing their partisan political games\u2019 as the three top Republican lawmakers lead the House impeachment inquiry against President Biden.<\/p>\n
Hunter Biden\u2019s attorney, Abbe Lowell, penned a lengthy letter to Johnson, R-La., on Wednesday, asking him to use his \u2018newly minted leadership post responsibly\u2019 and to \u2018think twice before joining\u2019 the \u2018spectacle\u2019 of House Republican-led investigations into Hunter Biden and the Biden family\u2019s business dealings.<\/p>\n
\u2018Before you cast your lot with and cede additional authority to those who have betrayed the trust placed in their offices by the Constitution, you should consider the numerous lies, falsehoods, and fabricated illustrations by your chamber\u2019s chairmen in the course of peddling baseless allegations of misconduct by our client or his family that now will form the basis for them abusing their power with improper demands for records and testimony,\u2019 Lowell wrote.<\/p>\n
\u2018Even in the era of \u2018alternative facts,\u2019 your colleagues\u2019 manipulation and disregard for the truth is breathtaking,\u2019 Lowell continued. \u2018Please remind those who sat with you on November 1 what you recently said: that House Republicans have a \u2018constitutional responsibility to follow th[e] truth,\u2019 wherever it leads, and you promised to \u2018only follow facts\u2019 and not \u2018use this for political partisan games.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
He added, \u2018These chairmen are about to ignore your admonition by continuing to pursue baseless allegations.\u2019<\/p>\n
Hunter Biden\u2019s attorney slammed Republican lawmakers, saying they are \u2018using \u2018oversight\u2019 proceedings to distort text message conversations\u2019 between Hunter and James Biden while also \u2018falsely claiming a Burisma executive asked for Hunter Biden\u2019s help to stymie efforts of a Ukrainian prosecutor general,\u2019 among other lines of inquiry, while casting whistleblower allegations as false.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Mr. Speaker, over the past few months, these three chairmen and various of their colleagues have participated in interviews and led or attended many proceedings regarding the investigation (and now prosecution) of our client,\u2019 Lowell wrote. \u2018They have dumped into the public transcripts of interviews and entire IRS case files that they were given as part of that investigation, and they have adopted so-called \u2018whistleblowers\u2019 to champion their efforts (while ignoring other witnesses) despite often-contradictory narratives.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018When another law enforcement agent or U.S. Attorney has contradicted a witness\u2019s past statements, one or another of these three \u2018don\u2019t let the facts get in the way\u2019 chairmen either ignore or misrepresent what the witness said as mere inconvenient truths,\u2019 Lowell continued. \u2018Their clear willingness to bend the facts, at any cost, to support a distorted and made-up version of events is stunning but has become the norm of many in the Republican Party\u2019s baseless inquiries into Hunter Biden and his family.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Now, perhaps believing he has your blessing, Chairman Comer announced he will plow ahead by issuing around two dozen new subpoenas. Two dozen,\u2019 Lowell said.<\/p>\n
\u2018Ending this letter the way it began, we want to go back to our hope that you will be a different Speaker \u2014 one who restores the integrity and reputation of your chamber; one who, as you promised, \u2018restore[s] the people\u2019s faith\u2019 and \u2018regular order\u2019 in the House; and one who declared his role would be to \u2018only follow facts\u2019 and not \u2018use this for political partisan games,\u2019 he wrote.<\/p>\n
\u2018This can begin with your holding Chairmen Comer, Jordan, and Smith to the facts and stopping them from continuing their partisan political games,\u2019 he continued. \u2018The latest example of their hoping to do the opposite is ripe for your intervention.\u2019<\/p>\n
Lowell added, \u2018We look forward to working with you in your new role as Speaker of the House.\u2019<\/p>\n
Raj Shah, who is Johnson\u2019s deputy chief of staff for communications, dismissed Lowell\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n
\u2018President Biden and the White House have repeatedly lied to the American people about his involvement and knowledge of the Biden family\u2019s business dealings \u2013 receiving millions through their shell companies \u2013 from foreign adversaries,\u2019 Shah said in a statement. \u2018We have learned this because of the diligent work of House investigators, who will continue to follow the facts where they may lead.\u2019<\/p>\n
