British transportation police released images on Sunday while seeking to identify those involved in a \u2018racially aggravated altercation\u2019 captured on camera at a London metro station while the city was swarmed by hundreds of thousands of anti-Israel demonstrators demanding a cease-fire in Gaza on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The London Metropolitan Police had earlier said it was \u2018aware of the videos filmed in Waterloo and Victoria stations yesterday which show unacceptable abuse including anti-Semitic language, as well as threatening behavior,\u2019 adding that British Transport Police (BTP), which polices the transportation system including stations, was leading the investigations.<\/p>\n
In releasing four images on Sunday, British Transport Police (BTP) said officers were looking to speak with the men depicted \u2018following a racially aggravated altercation at Waterloo Station yesterday, 11 November.\u2019 The message on X said police believe the individuals in the images \u2018may have information that could help their investigation.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
The four men were depicted in a video circulated online calling out \u2018terrorists f\u2014ers, mate,\u2019 and \u2018f\u2014, you, you terrorist c\u2014\u2018 and other remarks toward a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators inside the Waterloo station. Appearing to have come in contact with someone off camera, one of the men yelled, \u2018who are you f\u2014ing hitting?\u2019 and appeared to go after the other group before a friend intervened and pulled him away. Someone calls out to them, \u2018You\u2019re disrespectful to all the dead.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018F\u2014, off, we were born in this country! We were f\u2014ing born in this country\u2019 one of the men whose photo was released calls out. The person recording on a cell phone says from behind the camera, \u2018I was born here too,\u2019 before a female voice comes over the loudspeaker asking if police are in the station.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018You care about this country but you\u2019re causing a f\u2014ing riot?\u2019 the person filming taunts one man.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018You are causing a riot mate,\u2019 the man shouts back before turning and walking away.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The demonstrations and counter-protests came the same weekend Britain honors its war dead with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n
British Transportation Police on Sunday also released a photo of a woman following an \u2018anti-semitic hate crime at Victoria Station\u2019 Saturday, asking the public, \u2018Do you recognise this woman?\u2019 That woman was seen in a video circulating online calling out \u2018Killers. Death to the Jews.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Another video shared on social media showed a man, standing several feet away in a London metro station, waving to a woman wearing a hijab and calling out \u2018you\u2019re a terrorist lover\u2019 and \u2018go away.\u2019 Journalist Lorraine King, however, claimed in the caption shared on X that her \u2018Muslim friend was accosted by this \u2018charming\u2019 man at Charing Cross Station who she said told her \u2018to go back home\u2019, before calling her a \u2018rat\u2019 and a \u2018terrorist.\u2019\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018She\u2019s a vulnerable hijab wearing woman and I\u2019m very upset about this,\u2019 King wrote to her 23,900 followers. \u2018I can\u2019t believe this is England 2023.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
BTP announced an arrest in connection to that incident Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Detectives have arrested a man in his 40s for racially aggravated public order offences in connection with this incident \u2013 he is currently in police custody,\u2019 the agency wrote on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n
BTP also said officers intervened in the Victoria station incident to prevent the situation from escalating and \u2018disrupting the traveling public.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
After an estimated 300,000 anti-Israel demonstrators took to the streets of London on Saturday demanding a cease-fire in Gaza, London Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist issued a statement, saying \u2018The extreme violence from the right-wing protesters toward the police today was extraordinary and deeply concerning.\u2019 Twist claimed who he deemed right-wing protesters arrived early, stating they were there to protect monuments, but some were already intoxicated and \u2018clearly looking for confrontation.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Categorizing the group as \u2018largely football hooligans from across the UK,\u2019 Twist claimed they called out to officers, \u2018You\u2019re not English anymore,\u2019 and attacked or threatened cops preventing them from being able to confront the main pro-Palestinian march. Police said searches of these individuals found weapons, including a knife, baton and knuckledusters, as well as Class A drugs. Nine officers were injured during the day, including two requiring hospital treatment with a fractured elbow and a suspected dislocated hip.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Twist charged that \u2018while the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign (PSC) march did not see the sort of physical violence carried out by the right wing, we know that for London\u2019s Jewish communities whose fears and concerns we absolutely recognize, the impact of hate crime and in particular anti-Semitic offenses is just as significant.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
More than 126 people were arrested, as London police released images of others in the crowd they claim to be actively investigating.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That includes one demonstrator, a woman, seen holding a placard reading, \u2018No British politician should be a friend of Israel.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
