House Republicans are eyeing a prime pickup opportunity in Virginia, where Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., announced her retirement early on Monday.<\/p>\n

Spanberger, a former CIA officer, is leaving the House to run for governor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Nothing is going right for Democrats in Virginia\u2019s Seventh District, but the NRCC is all hands on deck to flip this now-open seat and grow the House Republican majority,\u2019 the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the House GOP\u2019s campaign arm, said minutes after Spanberger\u2019s announcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Spanberger joining the other swing-district Democrats racing for the exits makes House Democrats\u2019 climb out of the minority that much steeper.\u2019<\/p>\n

Her 7th Congressional District encompasses part of Northern and Central Virginia. Democrats\u2019 chances of holding onto it sunk in response to Spanberger \u2014 the nonpartisan Cook Political Report downgraded the district from a \u2018Likely\u2019 Democrat hold to just \u2018leaning\u2019 blue.<\/p>\n

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Justin Chermol told Fox News Digital, \u2018Virginians have consistently made clear \u2014 including just last week \u2014 that they want leaders focused on protecting fundamental rights and freedoms, growing the middle-class, and delivering results for working families. That\u2019s why the Seventh District will stay in Democratic hands in 2024.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Democratic Party did have a strong performance in Virginia\u2019s statewide elections last month, defending the majority in the state Senate while also flipping the House of Delegates blue.<\/p>\n

Spanberger\u2019s district would not be a far-fetched victory for the GOP. She won the seat from Republican incumbent Rep. David Brat in 2018 and only narrowly won re-election both in 2020 and 2022. She was considered one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the last election cycle.<\/p>\n

However, like the state of Virginia, her district was won by President Biden in 2020.<\/p>\n

Republicans currently hold the House by a narrow four-seat majority.<\/p>\n

Holding onto that edge will have to come with both flipping new swing districts like Spanberger\u2019s and defending their own vulnerable members in places like New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cook Political Report projects 170 solidly Democratic seats compared to Republicans holding 190. The left is also projected to have 40 possible swing seats and 33 on the right.<\/p>\n

\u2018When we rise above the chaos and division, we can focus on what matters most to Virginians \u2014 lowering prescription drug prices, growing the middle class, lowering costs and easing inflation,\u2019 Spanberger said in her campaign debut video.<\/p>\n

\u2018No more using teachers and our kids as political pawns. It\u2019s about focusing on recruiting and retaining teachers so all of our kids can succeed, and stopping extremists from shredding women\u2019s reproductive rights.\u2019<\/p>\n

If she wins the Democratic primary, it will not be current GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin who Spanberger would be facing. Virginia\u2019s constitution forbids governors from serving more than one consecutive term.<\/p>\n\n
