{"id":11797,"date":"2023-11-18T13:49:02","date_gmt":"2023-11-18T13:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/18\/dwindling-ammunition-a-jailed-artist-and-kyivs-new-foothold-in-the-south-the-latest-from-ukraine\/"},"modified":"2023-11-18T13:49:02","modified_gmt":"2023-11-18T13:49:02","slug":"dwindling-ammunition-a-jailed-artist-and-kyivs-new-foothold-in-the-south-the-latest-from-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/18\/dwindling-ammunition-a-jailed-artist-and-kyivs-new-foothold-in-the-south-the-latest-from-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Dwindling ammunition, a jailed artist and Kyiv\u2019s new \u2018foothold\u2019 in the south: The latest from Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukraine this week claimed to have \u201cgained a foothold\u201d on the left bank\u00a0of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the Dnipro River, a welcome boost after its much vaunted counteroffensive failed to make major gains.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      But it has been worse news elsewhere for Kyiv, after Germany admitted European targets for providing ammunition would fall short.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Here are the main developments from Ukraine this week.  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    \u2018Foothold\u2019 in the south<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukrainian forces say they have have \u201cgained a foothold\u201d on the left (eastern)<strong> <\/strong>bank of the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThanks to their courage and professionalism, the Ukrainian marines in cooperation with other units of the Defense Forces, managed to gain a foothold in several bridgeheads,\u201d the statement said Friday. \u201cUkrainian marines are conducting strikes on the left bank of the Kherson region and are carrying out activities to destroy the enemy.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The development marks a potentially significant advance for\u00a0Ukraine across a natural defensive barrier for Russian forces.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Russia acknowledged the presence of Ukrainian troops on the Dnipro River\u2019s east bank on Wednesday. The\u00a0Russian-appointed acting head of the Kherson region administration, Vladimir Saldo, made the announcement in a Telegram post, citing the Russian military operating in the area.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      According to Saldo, \u201csmall groups\u201d of Ukrainian soldiers are spread \u201cfrom a railway bridge,\u201d that is located in the area of the east bank to Krynky, a village east of Kherson.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukraine has staged cross-river raids before but the announcement signals Kyiv has a sustained presence in the region that could theoretically give a launching place to push further south toward occupied Crimea.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukraine launched a broad counteroffensive along the front lines in the country\u2019s east and south earlier this summer, but made only incremental gains and recaptured relatively small settlements.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"graphic\">\n<div class=\"graphic__anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    EU ammunition targets fall short<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The European Union\u2019s goal of supplying\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0with 1 million rounds of artillery ammunition is unlikely to be achieved, Germany\u2019s defense minister warned.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cIt can be assumed that the 1 million rounds will not be reached,\u201d Boris Pistorius said ahead of an EU defense ministers meeting in Brussels. EU member states are working with industry to ramp up production, he added.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In\u00a0March, EU member states agreed to provide Ukraine with 1 million rounds of artillery ammunition for Ukraine to be delivered within 12 months.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Pistorius\u2019 warning came after Josep Borrell, the EU\u2019s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy,\u00a0said the bloc may not meet targets for ammunition production to supply Kyiv<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>by the end of the year, but said efforts were underway to increase production capacity.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Both Ukraine and Russia need to replenish extraordinary amounts of\u00a0ammunition\u00a0as a grinding war of attrition continues in Ukraine\u2019s east and south.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      According to South Korea\u2019s National Intelligence Service, North Korea has exported more than 1 million shells to Russia since early August. The\u00a0US has also been ramping up\u00a0ammunition\u00a0production to supply Ukraine.  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    Russian convict pardoned<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      A former Russian detective convicted for his role in orchestrating the 2006 assassination of investigative journalist\u00a0Anna Politkovskaya\u00a0has been pardoned by Russian President Vladimir Putin after being recruited to fight in\u00a0Ukraine, his lawyer told state media TASS.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Sergey Khadzhikurbanov was sentenced to 20 years in prison for organizing the killing of Politkovskaya, a columnist for the investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta and one of the Kremlin\u2019s fiercest critics, who was shot dead in Moscow on October 7, 2006 \u2013 Putin\u2019s birthday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Khadzhikurbanov\u2019s lawyer, Alexey Mikhalchik, told TASS on Monday that his client had \u201csigned a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, subsequently receiving a pardon from President [Putin].\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Mikhalchik said after the completion of his initial contract with the Russian military, Khadzhikurbanov had continued to serve and currently holds a \u201cleadership position\u201d in one of the combat units after being offered a new contract.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Khadzhikurbanov, formerly a Moscow police officer, was sentenced in 2014 by a Moscow court for his role in Politkovskaya\u2019s murder. Before being pardoned by Putin, his original prison term was due to conclude in 2034.  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    UK foreign minister visits Kyiv<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      British Foreign Secretary David Cameron arrived in Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv on Thursday, where he met with Zelensky, just a few days after his appointment as the UK\u2019s top diplomat this week.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The visit was previously unannounced and comes amid<strong> <\/strong>concerns that the Israel-Gaza conflict will divert international attention from the war in Ukraine.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cI wanted this to be my first visit, personally. I admire the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people,\u201d Cameron told the Ukrainian president, according to a video of the meeting posted on Zelensky\u2019s social media accounts.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Zelensky thanked Cameron for his support, telling the foreign<strong> <\/strong>secretary that<strong> <\/strong>the world is \u201cnot focused on the situation on our battlefield and in Ukraine,\u201d and that the \u201cdivided focus really doesn\u2019t help.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Cameron \u2013 a former UK prime<strong> <\/strong>minister<strong> <\/strong>\u2013 was on his first overseas trip since his shock appointment.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cWe will continue giving you the moral support, the diplomatic support, the economic one, but above all the military support that you need. Not just this year, next year but for however long it takes,\u201d the UK foreign minister said.  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    Russia jails artist<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      A Russian artist was sentenced to seven years in jail on Thursday for replacing price tags with anti-war messages in a supermarket.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      According to the press service of St. Petersburg courts, Alexandra<strong> <\/strong>Skochilenko was found guilty of \u201cpublic dissemination of deliberately false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Despite Skochilenko pleading not guilty and the defense seeking acquittal, the court imposed a seven-year sentence with a three-year ban on activities related to using \u201celectronic or information and telecommunication networks,\u201d the press service said in a Telegram post.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The prosecution claimed that in March last year, Skochilenko \u201cplaced paper fragments containing deliberately false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in places for attaching commodity price tags\u201d in a chain supermarket in St. Petersburg.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Skochilenko, who has been kept in pretrial detention since April 2022, has had deteriorating health, according to the independent investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
