{"id":11965,"date":"2023-11-22T14:48:36","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T14:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/22\/indian-rescuers-dig-past-halfway-mark-in-efforts-to-reach-trapped-workers\/"},"modified":"2023-11-22T14:48:36","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T14:48:36","slug":"indian-rescuers-dig-past-halfway-mark-in-efforts-to-reach-trapped-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/22\/indian-rescuers-dig-past-halfway-mark-in-efforts-to-reach-trapped-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian rescuers dig past halfway mark in efforts to reach trapped workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Rescuers in India drilled past the halfway mark on Wednesday in efforts to reach workers trapped in a partially collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Forty-one labourers became trapped in India\u2019s northern Uttarakhand state after part of the passageway to the tunnel\u2019s entrance gave way on November 12, sparking a frantic rescue mission.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The operation has been able to use heavy machinery to successfully drill through two-thirds of the way through the rubble to reach the workers that have been trapped for more than a week, according to authorities on Wednesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      A total of 39 meters\u2019 drilling has been done with an Auger machine, according to a press release issued by state authorities, adding the drilling was \u201cdone at a fast pace.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      There is believed to be a total distance of 60 meters worth of debris between the rescuers and those trapped, authorities said earlier.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, senior government official Dr. Neeraj Khairlanji said, \u201cIf there are no further hurdles, then maybe by later tonight or early morning we may have some good news.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The incident earlier this month left workers confined behind a pile of rubble with little oxygen and water.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Authorities established contact with the men soon after the collapse and embarked on a mission to bring them out safely, aided by local police, India\u2019s Disaster Management Authority and State Disaster Response Fund.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In what was described as the operation\u2019s \u201cfirst success,\u201d rescuers managed to insert a 53-meter (174 ft) pipe through the rubble late Monday, allowing them to deliver their first hot meal of lentils, water, medicines and oxygen to the trapped laborers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      A second pipeline was put in place on Tuesday to deliver more food to the workers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The tunnel is part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s Char Dham Highway project, a multimillion-dollar infrastructure plan to improve connectivity in the state of Uttarakhand and provide better access to important pilgrimage locations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Uttarakhand, a mountainous and picturesque state on India\u2019s border with China, is often referred to as \u201cDevbhumi\u201d or \u201cLand of the Gods\u201d owing to its rich cultural heritage and the abundance of Hindu religious sites.  <\/p>\n\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rescuers in India drilled past the halfway mark on Wednesday in efforts to reach workers trapped in a partially collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas.
