{"id":12005,"date":"2023-11-23T13:52:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T13:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/23\/peru-has-lost-more-than-half-its-water-reserves-as-glaciers-rapidly-melt\/"},"modified":"2023-11-23T13:52:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T13:52:52","slug":"peru-has-lost-more-than-half-its-water-reserves-as-glaciers-rapidly-melt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/23\/peru-has-lost-more-than-half-its-water-reserves-as-glaciers-rapidly-melt\/","title":{"rendered":"Peru\u00a0has lost more than half its water reserves as glaciers rapidly melt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Peru\u00a0has lost 56% of its tropical\u00a0glaciers in the last six decades due to climate change, according to a new government inventory released on Wednesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Peru\u00a0holds 68% of the world\u2019s tropical\u00a0glaciers and warming temperatures have led to melting and the creation of new mountain lagoons that risk overflowing and flooding, the National Institute of Research of Mountain\u00a0Glaciers and Ecosystems said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The report uses satellite imagery until 2020 and shows that 2,084\u00a0glaciers are covering 1,050 square kilometers (405 square miles) in\u00a0Peru, compared to the 2,399 square kilometers of ice and snow in 1962.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cIn four years, from 2016 to 2020 we have lost almost 6% of these high mountain\u00a0glaciers,\u201d Beatriz Fuentealba, the institute\u2019s director, said from the Ancash region where many\u00a0glaciers have disappeared.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      According to the inventory, 164 lagoons have been formed or are in the process of formation in the last four years, bringing the number of glacial lagoons up to 8,466, covering about 1,081 square kilometers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThe new lagoons could be, in the future, water reserves, but being at high altitudes they cause a danger of overflowing and flooding,\u201d said Jesus Gomez, director of research on\u00a0glaciers at the Ministry of the Environment.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Nearly all of\u00a0Peru\u2019s tropical\u00a0glaciers are above 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) above sea level while the new lagoons are at an altitude of between 4,000 and 5,000 meters, the report said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Almost 20 million\u00a0Peruvians benefit directly or indirectly from the water that comes down from the\u00a0glaciers, according to the report.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThis means that we have lost more than half of our water reserves,\u201d said Environment Minister Albina Ruiz, noting that glacial retreat is impacting the natural mountain ecosystem.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cAlthough we cannot prevent\u00a0glaciers from disappearing over the years, we can reduce the speed at which they are being lost,\u201d she said, calling for less pollution, more green areas and \u201cabove all, recognizing that the mountain provides us with life.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peru\u00a0has lost 56% of its tropical\u00a0glaciers in the last six decades due to climate change, according to a new government inventory released on Wednesday.
