A liberal columnist posted a column in the Washington Post calling California Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s alleged \u2018shadow campaign\u2019 a \u2018patriotic\u2019 move and slammed the Democratic Party for the \u2018reckless gamble\u2019 of moving forward with President Biden in 2024.<\/p>\n
\u2018Here\u2019s the reality: Whether you like Biden or not (I do, and I\u2019m pretty sure Newsom does, too), the Democratic Party right now is taking a shockingly reckless gamble with the country\u2019s future,\u2019 journalist Matt Bai wrote in the Washington Post on Wednesday, the day before the highly anticipated debate between Newsom and Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.<\/p>\n
Bai outlines the recent prominent moves made by Newsom that have led to accusations from many\u00a0 on both sides of the aisle that Newsom is running a \u2018shadow campaign\u2019 to step in for Biden as questions continue to grow about his age.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Bai then slams Democrats, including Sen. John Fetterman, who publicly defended Biden\u2019s re-election and dismissed Newsom\u2019s potential challenge. Fetterman said earlier this year that Newsom doesn\u2019t have the \u2018guts\u2019 to admit he\u2019s running and said anyone going against Biden is writing a \u2018check for Trump.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Because, apparently, having guts in the Democrat Party right now means mindlessly cheerleading for the president and hoping, despite all available data and the ominous mood, that everything is going to work out just fine,\u2019 Bai wrote.<\/p>\n
Bai continued: \u2018The oldest president in history is about to become an even older nominee, backstopped by a vice president whom barely a third of the country likes. For the next year, we will all be one major health issue, or one small slip on the stairs, from inviting a lying autocrat back to the White House.\u2019<\/p>\n
Bai wrote that the \u2018Democratic answer\u2019 to this problem has been \u2018some version\u2019 of \u2018Don\u2019t worry, we\u2019ve got this.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Which might sound familiar to you, since it\u2019s precisely what Hillary Clinton\u2019s strategists told everyone in 2016, when they tried, mostly with success, to shut down support for anyone who dared to run against her,\u2019 Bai wrote. \u2018That worked out great.\u2019<\/p>\n
Bai wrote that Democrats should watch the Fox News debate between the two governors and \u2018assess Newsom\u2019s skills and his command of the issues, just in case they should wake up one day and find themselves in the market for an alternative to Biden who isn\u2019t named Harris.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018That\u2019s not me being mean or ghoulish. That\u2019s being practical, and even patriotic.\u2019<\/p>\n
Bai said that viewers will see Newsom as a \u2018polished politician\u2019 who can be \u2018too slick\u2019 but can \u2018articulate\u2019 a \u2018next-generation agenda without pretending \u2018everything will be OK\u2019 if the party is loyal to Biden.<\/p>\n
\u2018In Democratic politics at the moment, that\u2019s about as brave as it gets,\u2019 Bai wrote.<\/p>\n
A Monmouth University poll released earlier this month showed that 76% of voters agreed Biden, 80, was \u2018too old\u2019 to serve another term, compared to just 48% who said the same about Trump, 77.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Newsom has denied he\u2019s running for president multiple times, and when asked, he told NewsNation\u2019s Chris Cuomo in September that he\u2019s \u2018not worthy of that conversation\u2019 and that Biden \u2018deserves it.\u2019<\/p>\n
At the start of the Fox News debate on \u2018Hannity\u2019 Thursday night, Newsom again denied running a shadow campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018The one thing we have in common is neither of us will be our party\u2019s nominee in 2024,\u2019 Newsom told DeSantis.<\/p>\n
Fox News Digital reached out to the DNC for comment but did not immediately receive a response.<\/p>\n\n
