\u2018Squad\u2019 Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., claimed that \u2018all\u2019 underage women will face \u2018genital examinations\u2019 if biological men are barred from women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n
Ocasio-Cortez made her claim during the Tuesday House Oversight Subcommittee on Health hearing featuring NCAA swimming legend and women\u2019s sports advocate Riley Gaines.<\/p>\n
The New York Democrat said there were several proposals looking to \u2018marginalize\u2019 transgender Americans before claiming during her questioning that women would have to get their pants checked if someone disbelieves their stated gender.<\/p>\n
\u2018We are talking about opening up all women and girls to genital examinations when they are underage, potentially just because someone can point to someone and say, I don\u2019t think you are a girl,\u2019 she claimed.<\/p>\n
\u2018And we\u2019re saying this in an environment of a post-Dobbs America, where states are criminalizing access to abortion and want nothing more than data on women to figure out when, who\u2019s getting a menstrual cycle, who doesn\u2019t have one, and we\u2019re supposed to believe this is going to make us better and safer?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018I think not, and, per usual, I don\u2019t believe we\u2019re sitting here on a panel of men that has actually thought about the biology and privacy consequences of all women, trans or cisgendered,\u2019 the \u2018Squad\u2019 Democrat added.<\/p>\n
Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s claim comes almost a year after the Ohio state Senate removed a controversial provision from a state House proposal barring biological men from competing against women, which would have required \u2018internal and external\u2019 exams to confirm a student-athlete\u2019s gender.<\/p>\n
Ohio Senate Republicans replaced the provision with a requirement for student-athletes whose gender is in question to \u2018present a copy of the participant\u2019s original birth certificate\u2019 to compete.<\/p>\n
\u2018I\u2019m not sure why that\u2019s in the bill, it\u2019s unnecessary,\u2019 State Senate President Matt Huffman said about the genital inspection provision in June 2022.<\/p>\n
\u2018All of these tests can be done with a simple DNA swab,\u2019 Huffman added.<\/p>\n
Tuesday\u2019s hearing saw fireworks from the get-go as Gaines, an outspoken advocate of keeping women\u2019s sports limited to biological women, fired back at Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s fellow \u2018Squad\u2019-mate, Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa.<\/p>\n
Lee called Gaines\u2019 testimony, as well as the testimonies of the other women leaders looking to restrict women\u2019s sports to biological women, \u2018transphobic\u2019 in her opening remarks.<\/p>\n
Gaines blasted Lee, the ranking member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Health, after the Squad member took her shot at the witnesses\u2019 testimony.<\/p>\n
\u2018There\u2019s a place for everybody to play sports in this country,\u2019 Gaines said, noting transgender Americans were included in her view. \u2018But unsafe, unfair and discriminatory practices must stop.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Inclusion cannot be prioritized over safety and fairness,\u2019 the former NCAA swimmer concluded in her opening remarks. \u2018And ranking member Lee, if my testimony makes me \u2018transphobic,\u2019 then I believe your opening monologue makes you a misogynist.\u2019<\/p>\n
