{"id":12612,"date":"2023-12-07T13:01:16","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T13:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/07\/state-of-emergency-in-seychelles-as-massive-explosion-causes-chaos\/"},"modified":"2023-12-07T13:01:16","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T13:01:16","slug":"state-of-emergency-in-seychelles-as-massive-explosion-causes-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/07\/state-of-emergency-in-seychelles-as-massive-explosion-causes-chaos\/","title":{"rendered":"State of emergency in Seychelles as massive explosion causes chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan issued a state of emergency Thursday after a blast at an explosives store injured scores of people and brought the country to a standstill.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      It is unclear if there were any casualties following the explosion.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Schools are closed and only essential workers are permitted free movement after the explosion caused \u201cmassive damage\u201d in the Providence industrial area and surrounding areas, according to a statement from the president\u2019s office.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The country has also recently experienced heavy rains and flooding that has caused \u201cmajor destruction,\u201d the statement said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cFollowing an explosion at the CCCL explosives store that has caused massive damage to the Providence Industrial area and the surrounding areas and major destruction caused by flooding due to heavy rains, the President has declared a State of Emergency for today the 7th December,\u201d the statement outlined.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      According to local media,\u00a0at least 100 people were injured in the blast\u00a0and another two were killed by floods.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The Providence Industrial area is located in Mah\u00e9, the largest of 115 islands in the Seychelles archipelago.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Officials in Providence said the rubble-strewn area was akin to a \u201cwar zone\u201d as nearly every building in the area sustained significant damage,\u00a0according to local reports.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ramkalawan\u2019s office asked the public to cooperate with the police and stay home.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Seychelles, a former British colony, is situated in the Indian Ocean, off the\u00a0East African sub-region.
