An Al Jazeera journalist has died after being badly injured during an Israeli attack in southern Gaza and then forced to wait five hours for medical attention, the network said on Friday. <\/p>\n
Camera operator Samer Abu Daqqa died of wounds sustained in the attack, the Qatar-based network said, adding that he was bleeding for hours before medical personnel could reach him due to heavy shelling in the city. <\/p>\n
Dahdouh was eventually evacuated to a hospital, but Abu Daqqa\u2019s injury was too severe to survive, according to Walid Alomari, Al Jazeera\u2019s bureau chief for Jerusalem and the West Bank. \u201cToo many in Gaza bleed and die because ambulances\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0reach\u00a0them,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
Al Jazeera said it did not have further information about Abu Daqqa\u2019s injuries due to poor telecommunications in the area. <\/p>\n
Abu Daqqa and Dahdouh were on assignment in the southern city of Khan Younis when they came under fire. Daddouh later said they had been hit by a drone strike. <\/p>\n
At least 17 others were killed and dozens of others were injured early Friday morning after artillery fire struck the\u00a0city\u2019s Haifa school and a residential home in the area. <\/p>\n
Three civil defense workers in Gaza whose rescue efforts at the school were being covered by the al Jazeera team were also killed, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Interior. <\/p>\n
Khan Younis has been heavily bombarded by the Israeli military since a fragile truce between Hamas and Israel broke down on 1 December. <\/p>\n
The IDF on Thursday called on people in Gaza to move from parts of\u00a0Khan\u00a0Younis\u00a0to displacement shelters in the same area to \u201censure safety,\u201d the latest in a series of social media messages from the IDF telling Palestinians to flee from one place to another to avoid the Israeli offensive against Hamas. <\/p>\n
IDF Arabic spokesperson Avichay Ardaee posted on X telling people in\u00a0Khan\u00a0Younis\u00a0to move from several \u201cblocks\u201d in the city to three shelters for displaced people in western part of the area and warned against using eastern roads due to IDF advances. <\/p>\n
Al Jazeera on Friday aired a video of Dahdouh receiving treatment at a hospital for wounds in his right arm and abdomen, where the veteran journalist can be seen crying out in pain. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s not the first time tragedy has struck Dahdouh while covering the siege of Gaza. In October, Al Jazeera reported that an Israeli airstrike killed Dahdouh\u2019s wife, son and grandson. He received the news while he was on air. <\/p>\n
As of December 15, preliminary investigations by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found at least 64 journalists and media workers were among the thousands killed in Gaza since Israel\u2019s siege began on October 7, following Hamas\u2019 deadly terror attacks. <\/p>\n
The majority of journalists killed in this war have been Palestinians, alongside four Israeli and three Lebanese members of the press, according to CPJ. Thirteen journalists have also been reported injured, 13 are missing, and 19 have reportedly been arrested, the organization said. <\/p>\n
Abu Daqqa\u2019s colleagues have been paying tribute to his bravery following his death, with Al Jazeera investigative reporter Tamer Al-Mishal describing him as \u201cprofessional\u201d and \u201ca great cameraman and editor [who] doesn\u2019t fear anything.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cI spoke to him a few days ago and told him\u00a0\u2018Why\u00a0don\u2019t you join your family abroad?\u2019 And he told me they will be back soon when this war is over,\u201d Al-Mishal said. <\/p>\n
Abu Daqqa had decided not to leave Gaza, Al-Mishal added, noting that the cameraman had worked for more than 20 years for Al Jazeera. <\/p>\n
Al Jazeera\u00a0aired\u00a0video showing the journalist\u2019s friends and family crying\u00a0over\u00a0his\u00a0body at the\u00a0Al Nasser\u00a0medical complex\u00a0near Khan Younis. His mother Umm\u00a0Maher\u00a0was seen being carried by two people saying, \u201cHe hasn\u2019t seen his children, he hasn\u2019t seen his children.\u201d <\/p>\n
Abu Daqqa\u2019s wife and children \u2013 three boys and a daughter \u2013 are currently in Belgium, according to Al Jazeera. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe miss a great dear friend and father of three\u00a0[boys]\u00a0and a girl\u2026 Yes, he had an opportunity to work in Belgium, but he favored his beloved Gaza over Belgium,\u201d Alomari said. <\/p>\n\n
