{"id":13274,"date":"2023-12-27T14:50:29","date_gmt":"2023-12-27T14:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/27\/demonstrators-try-to-storm-belgrade-city-hall-in-protest-against-stolen-serbian-elections\/"},"modified":"2023-12-27T14:50:29","modified_gmt":"2023-12-27T14:50:29","slug":"demonstrators-try-to-storm-belgrade-city-hall-in-protest-against-stolen-serbian-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/27\/demonstrators-try-to-storm-belgrade-city-hall-in-protest-against-stolen-serbian-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Demonstrators try to storm Belgrade city hall in protest against \u2018stolen\u2019 Serbian elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Thousands gathered in Belgrade on Sunday in an anti-government protest to demand the annulment of Serbia\u2019s general election last week that was deemed \u201cunjust\u201d by international observers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      At least 35 people were arrested Sunday, according to N1, in what was the sixth straight day of protests since the parliamentary and local elections.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won 47% of the votes after President Aleksandar Vucic called a snap election, cementing his decade-long grip on power in the Balkan nation that is seeking membership of the European Union while retaining close ties to Russia.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      An international monitoring mission said the elections were held under \u201cunjust conditions,\u201d citing media bias, Vucic\u2019s improper influence and \u201cintimidation and pressure on voters, including cases of vote buying.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Members of the center-left Serbia Against Violence coalition \u2013 a nascent opposition movement founded after months-long anti-government protests this summer \u2013 attended Sunday\u2019s protest and accused Vucic of election theft.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cVucic, you have stolen not one but thousands and thousands of votes,\u201d Marinika Tepic, who has been on hunger strike since the elections, said at the protest. She called for the election to be annulled.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Srdjan Milivojevic, also a member of the opposition coalition, called Vucic a \u201cthief like the world has never seen before.\u201d He was seen attempting to open the door to the city hall, but was unable to enter.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cVucic, go away,\u201d the crowd chanted outside the building.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Responding to the protests in an address to the nation Sunday evening, Vucic told Serbs not to worry \u201cbecause there is no revolution happening.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThey won\u2019t be able to accomplish anything with this, and let us try not to hurt any of the random demonstrators by reacting mildly, peacefully,\u201d Vucic said, according to Radio Television of Serbia.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The protests come as Vucic\u2019s government is facing growing international pressure to investigate reports of electoral irregularities during last week\u2019s vote.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) said the election day had been \u201cmarked by numerous procedural deficiencies.\u201d The German Foreign Office said the findings were \u201cunacceptable for a country with EU candidate status.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The CRTA Election Observation Mission, an independent organization based in Belgrade, reported that \u201cvoter migration\u201d \u2013 whereby people were transported \u201cfrom other regions in Serbia and from abroad\u201d to vote in specific municipalities \u2013 \u201cmight have been used on a large scale to influence the outcomes of the local elections.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Andreas Schieder, an Austrian member of the European Parliament, said \u201cthe news about buses of non-residents coming to vote in Belgrade is shocking. Theft of votes, bribery and corruption must not be allowed in a democratic world.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Student groups in Belgrade announced they will stage a six-hour blockade of traffic in two parts of the city on Monday, as they continue to demand the annulment of the elections.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Without providing evidence, the Kremlin alleged that the protests were being stirred by unnamed foreign entities hoping to incite unrest in Serbia.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cThere are processes and attempts by third forces, including from abroad, to provoke such unrest in Belgrade. This is what we are seeing,\u201d Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Separately, Vucic met with Russian Ambassador Aleksandar Bocan-Harchenko in Belgrade.
