At least 20 people, including two children, were killed and 111 others injured in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian city of Belgorod on Saturday, Russia\u2019s\u00a0Ministry of Emergency Situations has said. <\/p>\n
The deaths were the result of a \u201cmassive\u201d attack on downtown Belgorod, according to Russian state news agency TASS, quoting the emergencies ministry. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis crime will not go unpunished,\u201d the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Kiev regime \u2026 is trying to divert attention from the defeats on the front lines and to provoke us into taking similar actions.\u201d <\/p>\n
Following the attack, Russia requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Russia\u2019s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, said Saturday. <\/p>\n
Saturday\u2019s shelling comes after Russia launched\u00a0overnight Thursday into Friday\u00a0its\u00a0biggest air attack on Ukraine since the start of its full-scale invasion, resulting in at least 40 deaths and more than 150 injuries. <\/p>\n
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been briefed about the attack in Belgorod, the Kremlin said, ordering a health ministry team and emergencies ministry rescuers to be sent to the city to help those affected. <\/p>\n
About 40\u00a0civilian facilities have been damaged in the city due to the shelling, which caused 10 fires which have since been extinguished. <\/p>\n
Russian authorities said Belgorod was also shelled Friday night with one civilian killed,\u00a0the region\u2019s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.\u00a0Four others, including a child, were injured, he\u00a0added. <\/p>\n
On Saturday, a child also died as a result of Ukrainian shelling in Russia\u2019s Bryansk region, the region\u2019s Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz said. <\/p>\n
Russia\u2019s defense ministry said it destroyed\u00a032\u00a0Ukrainian\u00a0UAVs\u00a0flying over the\u00a0Russian\u00a0regions of Bryansk, Oryol, Mursk, and Moscow, according to a Telegram post by the defense ministry Saturday. <\/p>\n
Ukraine has not publicly commented on the incidents and rarely claims responsibility for attacks on its neighbor. <\/p>\n
The toll from the Russian strikes on Ukraine \u2013 which saw an unprecedented number of drones and missiles fired at targets across the country \u2013 meanwhile continued to mount. <\/p>\n
A\u00a077-year-old man died from his injuries in the city of Odesa,\u00a0Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa region military administration said, bringing the total killed to 40. <\/p>\n
The man was critically injured when a missile hit a three-storey building in the center of Odesa, Kiper added. <\/p>\n
Schools, a maternity hospital, shopping arcades and blocks of flats were among the buildings hit in Friday\u2019s barrage, prompting widespread international condemnation and renewing calls for more military aid. <\/p>\n
The toll in the capital Kyiv rose to at least 16, after the bodies of more civilians were recovered from the rubble of a\u00a0warehouse,\u00a0Mayor\u00a0Vitaliy Klitschko said Saturday. All the deaths in Kyiv occurred at the warehouse. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe attack on the capital city on December 29 was the largest in terms of civilian casualties\u201d since the start of the full-scale invasion, he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cRescuers are working and will continue to clear the rubble until tomorrow,\u201d\u00a0Klitschko said. \u201cJanuary 1 will be declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv.\u201d <\/p>\n
During the wave of strikes, Poland\u2019s military authorities claimed that an \u201cunidentified airbourne object\u201d briefly entered its airspace. <\/p>\n
Russia said it would not give any any explanation \u201cuntil concrete evidence is presented.\u201d <\/p>\n
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wrote on X that NATO remained vigilant over the incident. <\/p>\n\n
