{"id":13538,"date":"2024-01-03T12:59:46","date_gmt":"2024-01-03T12:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/03\/miracle-at-haneda-passengers-describe-terror-and-relief-after-fiery-japan-airlines-collision\/"},"modified":"2024-01-03T12:59:46","modified_gmt":"2024-01-03T12:59:46","slug":"miracle-at-haneda-passengers-describe-terror-and-relief-after-fiery-japan-airlines-collision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/03\/miracle-at-haneda-passengers-describe-terror-and-relief-after-fiery-japan-airlines-collision\/","title":{"rendered":"Miracle at Haneda: Passengers describe terror and relief after fiery Japan Airlines collision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      When Japanese Airlines flight 516 touched down at Tokyo\u2019s Haneda airport\u00a0carrying hundreds of people on Tuesday it erupted into a terrifying fireball.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The Airbus A350\u00a0passenger plane had collided with an earthquake relief aircraft on the runway \u2013 killing five people \u2013 and the crew had just minutes to ensure all passengers were evacuated before flames consumed the entire plane.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      As smoke rapidly filled the cabin, flight attendants used megaphones to calm and corral anxious passengers, who escaped through three exits on emergency slides.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      All 379 people on JAL flight 516, including eight children under the age of two, were safely evacuated \u2013 a feat that surprised aviation experts and has been described as miraculous by some on board.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cI heard an explosion about 10 minutes after everyone and I got off the plane,\u201d 28-year-old passenger Tsubasa Sawada told Reuters. \u201cI can only say it was a miracle, we could have died if we were late.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Japan Airlines said four of its passengers were taken to hospital, but the worst injury reported was that one person sustained \u201cbruising.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Five of the six crew members died on the second aircraft, a De Havilland Canada DHC-8, according to Japan\u2019s transport minister, Tetsuo Saito. Public broadcaster NHK said the plane\u2019s captain was in a critical condition.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Japan Airlines is taking part in the investigation to determine who is responsible for the deadly crash, its senior vice president of corporate safety and security Tadayuki Tsutsumi told reporters.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The airline said its\u00a0crew had been cleared to land by air traffic control before the collision. Audio from\u00a0LiveATC.net\u00a0appears to detail the crew reading back a clearance order for runway 34, saying \u201ccleared to land 34 right.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Passengers onboard the Airbus A350 and witnesses to the collision described terror giving way to relief as it became clear everyone onboard survived.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cI really thought I was going to die,\u201d Sawada said, according to Reuters.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Runway incursions, as this is classed, are \u201crare but can be catastrophic,\u201d said\u00a0Graham Braithwaite, professor of safety and accident investigation at the UK\u2019s Cranfield University.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Guy Maestre, originally from France, was on board an adjacent plane at the time of the incident and described hearing a \u201cbig bang.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cFlames got higher and higher then we saw fire trucks go by the runway.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cI was hoping everyone was going to be safe,\u201d he said, adding that it was \u201cshocking to see.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      When the flight landed, Yamake said he initially didn\u2019t feel anything out of the ordinary.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cWe landed normally, didn\u2019t feel a shock or anything,\u201d Yamake said at Haneda airport after he was evacuated from the crash.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      He added that he saw a fire shortly before an announcement was made to evacuate the plane.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cBut then we saw fire coming out of the engines and I found it strange. Just as I was thinking why the fire was burning for so long, an announcement came and said we probably hit something on the runway and we have to now evacuate the plane,\u201d Yamake said. \u201cWe could smell some smoke but passengers were not panicking a lot.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      He said he \u201cwas not really scared.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cSince we have landed already, I was thinking the plane probably won\u2019t explode by this point. We should be fine as long as everyone gets off the plane in an orderly manner.\u201d  <\/p>\n<div class=\"graphic\">\n<div class=\"graphic__anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The crew of Flight 516 have been praised for their speedy and cool-headed reactions that saved hundreds of lives.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Japan Airlines said the cabin crew used megaphones to direct passengers to safety after the plane\u2019s inflight announcement system malfunctioned.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Reports from inside the plane say flight attendants urged people to remain calm and within seconds of the plane coming to a standstill, were able to deploy the escape chutes and usher passengers off.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cIt\u2019s too soon to comment on the specifics of the incident, but what\u2019s clear is that the crew performed in an exemplary fashion,\u201d said Steven Erhlich, chair of\u00a0PilotsTogether\u00a0\u2013 a charity set up in the pandemic to support crew.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      He cited the fact that the passengers on the flight evacuated without taking their carry-on bags with them, which helped save lives.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cAny delay in evacuation could have been catastrophic, all for the sake of a laptop or carry-on bag. This incident could have been far worse if passengers hadn\u2019t heeded the warnings to leave their belongings behind,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cHe called me from inside and told me he saw smoke coming out.
