{"id":13588,"date":"2024-01-04T13:47:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T13:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/04\/ukraine-and-russia-carry-out-largest-prisoner-exchange-since-beginning-of-the-war\/"},"modified":"2024-01-04T13:47:17","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T13:47:17","slug":"ukraine-and-russia-carry-out-largest-prisoner-exchange-since-beginning-of-the-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/04\/ukraine-and-russia-carry-out-largest-prisoner-exchange-since-beginning-of-the-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine and Russia carry out largest\u00a0prisoner\u00a0exchange since beginning of the war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukraine and Russia have exchanged over 200\u00a0prisoners of war in what Kyiv called the largest\u00a0prisoner\u00a0swap between the two countries since the war began in February 2022.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the news in a social media post Wednesday, heralding the return of over 200 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians from Russian captivity.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ukraine\u2019s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of\u00a0Prisoners of War (KSHPPV) described the swap as the \u201clargest exchange of\u00a0prisoners of war since the full-scale invasion took place.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Among the group are seven soldiers who defended Snake Island, a rocky island in the Black Sea which became an evocative symbol of Ukrainian resistance in February 2022 when Ukrainian defenders managed to fend off a takeover from Russian soldiers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">       Soldiers who defended the besieged southern city of Mariupol and its Azovstal steel plant were also exchanged alongside POWs detained in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, according to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine,\u00a0Andriy Yermak.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Posting on Telegram, Yermak called it a \u201cdifficult exchange after a long pause.\u201d The last major exchange of\u00a0prisoners was carried out in August 2023 with Yermak pledging Wednesday to keep working to secure the release of all detained Ukrainians.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In return, Russia said 248 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukrainian controlled territory.
