Russia\u00a0unleashed\u00a0another\u00a0large\u00a0barrage\u00a0of\u00a0missiles\u00a0and\u00a0drones\u00a0against\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0on Saturday, the fourth such attack since December 29, amid concerns that Moscow is trying to overwhelm Ukraine\u2019s air defence. <\/p>\n
The\u00a0Russian assault was comprised\u00a0of\u00a040 attack weapons including cruise, aeroballistic, ballistic, aircraft, anti-aircraft guided\u00a0missiles\u00a0as well as strike UAVs, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. <\/p>\n
Ukraine\u00a0managed to take down eight\u00a0missiles, its air force said. Additionally they stated that \u201cover 20 launched air attack weapons did not reach their targets due to extensive electronic warfare countermeasures.\u201d <\/p>\n
The air raid warnings\u00a0and\u00a0defences were activated across the country. There were impacts in several regions, including the city\u00a0of\u00a0Chernihiv in northern\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0and Dnipro in the east. <\/p>\n
In Chernihiv, missile fragments caused damage to unoccupied civilian residential buildings in the city, according to the police. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe fragments\u00a0of\u00a0an enemy missile caused destruction in the private residential area\u00a0of\u00a0Chernihiv. Luckily, no people were injured\u201d, the police wrote on Telegram. <\/p>\n
The area was previously damaged which is why there were no civilian casualties, the local mayor said. <\/p>\n
In Dnipro, there were incoming hits in the city, according to the head\u00a0of Dnipropetrovsk region military administration Serhii Lysak. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are now establishing the extent\u00a0of\u00a0the damage caused by the strikes. However, people are always the priority. Luckily, everyone is safe\u201d, Lysak wrote on Telegram. <\/p>\n
Saturday\u2019s attacks are the fourth largest since\u00a0Russia\u00a0started large countrywide\u00a0barrages\u00a0on\u00a0December 29. <\/p>\n
Analysts say the recent onslaught of Russian missiles\u00a0aims to\u00a0overload Ukraine\u2019s limited missile defense. <\/p>\n
In a previous attack on January 7,\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0was only able to shoot down on 18 out\u00a0of the 59\u00a0missiles\u00a0launched. <\/p>\n
The Russian army has also been using new tactics as part of its aerial campaign, such as painting its Iranian-made\u00a0drones black, camouflaging them against the night sky. <\/p>\n
Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a press conference with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday that the country is far from having comprehensive air cover. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe lack Patriot systems,\u00a0and\u00a0we lack appropriate systems\u00a0of\u00a0different ranges. It is coming little by little. Something is on its way. We have agreed on something new. However, we still lack appropriate systems that fight\u00a0against\u00a0ballistic\u00a0missiles especially, for instance,\u201d Zelensky said. <\/p>\n
Ukraine\u00a0has been relying on mobile firing groups for air defenses to shoot down\u00a0drones\u00a0as anti-air\u00a0missiles\u00a0stocks run low. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey are now the backbone unit that destroys enemy UAVs.
