{"id":13984,"date":"2024-01-13T13:54:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-13T13:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/13\/ecuador-arrests-hundreds-in-bid-to-halt-eruption-of-gang-based-violence\/"},"modified":"2024-01-13T13:54:17","modified_gmt":"2024-01-13T13:54:17","slug":"ecuador-arrests-hundreds-in-bid-to-halt-eruption-of-gang-based-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/13\/ecuador-arrests-hundreds-in-bid-to-halt-eruption-of-gang-based-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecuador\u00a0arrests\u00a0hundreds in bid to halt eruption of gang-based violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Nearly 900 people have been arrested in\u00a0Ecuador\u00a0since Tuesday in a national security operation to stop an outburst\u00a0of\u00a0gang\u00a0violence, Ecuador\u2019s presidency said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The presidency says 94\u00a0of\u00a0the 859 people detained are members\u00a0of\u00a0what they call \u201cterrorist\u201d groups.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ecuador\u00a0has been rocked by blasts, police kidnappings and prison disturbances in a wave\u00a0of\u00a0violence beginning with the prison escape\u00a0of\u00a0one\u00a0of\u00a0Ecuador\u2019s most powerful drug lords last weekend.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ecuador\u2019s President Daniel Noboa on Tuesday declared the country to be in a state\u00a0of\u00a0\u201cinternal armed conflict,\u201d ordering security forces to \u201cneutralize\u201d several criminal\u00a0gangs accused\u00a0of\u00a0spreading extreme violence.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Noboa also designated 22 criminal\u00a0gangs to be \u201cterrorist\u201d organizations in the presidential decree.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In a further measure, the\u00a0Ecuadorian government announced on Thursday that foreigners who want to enter\u00a0the country\u00a0from Colombia\u00a0or Peru\u00a0will\u00a0have to provide\u00a0a criminal\u00a0record\u00a0certificate in a measure designed to \u201cprevent\u00a0and control the entry of individuals who constitute\u00a0a\u00a0threat or risk to public safety.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Noboa\u00a0has claimed that 90% of the foreign prisoners in\u00a0Ecuador\u00a0are Colombians, Peruvians,\u00a0and Venezuelans.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The violence was triggered by the escape of high-profile gang leader Adolfo \u201cFito\u201d Mac\u00edas from a prison in Guayaquil on Sunday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Following Fito\u2019s escape and the declaration, Ecuador\u2019s prison agency reported incidents in at least six prisons in different provinces on Sunday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Criminal groups then embarked on a wave of violent attacks in a show of strength designed to discourage efforts to crack down on their activities.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Ecuador, home to the Galapagos islands and a tourist-friendly dollar economy, was once known as an \u201cisland of peace,\u201d nestled between two of the world\u2019s largest cocaine producers, Peru and Colombia.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      But the country\u2019s deep ports have made it a key transit point for cocaine making its way to consumers in the United States and Europe.  <\/p>\n\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 900 people have been arrested in\u00a0Ecuador\u00a0since Tuesday in a national security operation to stop an outburst\u00a0of\u00a0gang\u00a0violence, Ecuador\u2019s presidency said.
