Pakistan on Tuesday strongly condemned an Iranian airstrike inside its borders that killed two children, calling it an \u201cunprovoked violation of its airspace\u201d and warning of retaliation. <\/p>\n
Iran said it used \u201cprecision missile and drone strikes,\u201d to destroy two strongholds of the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl, known in Iran as Jaish al-Dhulm,\u00a0in the Koh-e-Sabz area of Pakistan\u2019s southwest Balochistan province, according to Iran\u2019s state-aligned\u00a0Tasnim\u00a0news agency. <\/p>\n
The attack comes after Iran launched missiles in northern Iraq and Syria Monday, in the latest\u00a0escalation of hostilities in the Middle East where Israel\u2019s ongoing war in Gaza risks spiraling into a wider regional conflict. <\/p>\n
Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Ministry said the attack on its territory killed \u201ctwo innocent children\u201d <\/strong>and warned Iran of \u201cserious consequences.\u201d <\/p>\n It described the airstrike as an \u201cunprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran \u2026 inside Pakistani territory.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cIt is even more concerning that this illegal act has taken place despite the existence of several channels of communication between Pakistan and Iran,\u201d the ministry said. <\/p>\n Following the strike, nuclear-armed Pakistan lodged a \u201cstrong protest\u201d with a senior official in Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry in the Iranian capital Tehran and called on the Iranian charge d\u2019affairs, saying the \u201cresponsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran.\u201d <\/p>\n The\u00a0Jaish al-Adl\u00a0militant group late Tuesday said Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards had used six attack drones and a number of rockets to destroy two houses where the children and wives of its fighters lived. <\/p>\n Khetran also said a mosque near the homes was targeted and hit in the strikes. <\/p>\n Koh-e-Sabz \u2014 about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Pakistan\u2019s border with Iran \u2014 is known to be the home of Jaish-ul-Adl\u2019s former second-in-command Mullah Hashim, who was killed in clashes with Iranian forces in Sarawan, an Iranian region adjacent to Panjgur, in 2018. <\/p>\n Last month, Iran accused Jaish al-Adl militants of storming a police station in the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan,\u00a0which resulted in the deaths of 11 Iranian police officers, according to Tasnim. <\/p>\n Jaish al-Adl, or Army of Justice, is a separatist militant group that operates on both sides of the border and has previously claimed responsibility for attacks against Iranian targets. Its stated goal is the independence of Iran\u2019s Sistan and Baluchistan\u00a0province. <\/p>\n The strikes in Pakistan came a day after Iran\u2019s\u00a0Revolutionary Guards\u00a0launched ballistic missiles, targeting what it claimed was a spy base for Israel\u2019s intelligence agency Mossad in Erbil, northern Iraq, and at \u201canti-Iran terror groups\u201d in Syria. <\/p>\n Iran said the strikes in Iraq were in response to what it said were Israeli attacks that killed Iranian Revolutionary Guard commanders, and claimed targets in Syria were involved in the recent\u00a0dual bombings\u00a0in the city of Kerman during a memorial for the slain Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani that left scores dead and wounded. <\/p>\n It defended the strikes as a \u201cprecise and targeted\u201d operation to deter security threats,\u00a0Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said in a statement on Tuesday. <\/p>\n Iran\u2019s attacks will further\u00a0raise fears\u00a0that Israel\u2019s war in Gaza could widen into a\u00a0full-scale war\u00a0in the Middle East with grave humanitarian, political and economic consequences. <\/p>\n The attacks in Iraq and Syria were condemned by the United States as \u201creckless\u201d and imprecise, while the United Nations said, \u201csecurity concerns must be addressed through dialogue, not strikes.\u201d <\/p>\n Iraq said it submitted a complaint to the UN Security Council and the UN on Tuesday.
