{"id":14548,"date":"2024-01-25T01:46:25","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T01:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/25\/argentine-unions-hold-general-strike-against-new-leader-mileis-austerity-policies\/"},"modified":"2024-01-25T01:46:25","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T01:46:25","slug":"argentine-unions-hold-general-strike-against-new-leader-mileis-austerity-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/25\/argentine-unions-hold-general-strike-against-new-leader-mileis-austerity-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"Argentine unions hold general strike against new leader Milei\u2019s austerity policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Argentina\u2019s labor unions began a\u00a0nationwide general strike on Wednesday against austerity measures and reforms by the country\u2019s libertarian President Javier Milei.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Thousands\u00a0of people marched toward Congress in the capital of Buenos Aires on Wednesday amid the strike, which began at 10 a.m. ET and is set to last 12 hours.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Since taking office, Milei has announced a raft of public spending cuts and\u00a0asked lawmakers\u00a0to sign off on a sweeping program of deregulation that scraps protections for businesses and consumers and makes it easier to privatize public companies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and a group of social movements called the strike in opposition to a decree signed by Milei to deregulate the economy and an omnibus bill he has sent to lawmakers. Part of the decree has been temporarily suspended by an appeals court after a challenge by the CGT.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The strike has led to transport disruptions with flag carrier Aerol\u00edneas\u00a0Argentinas saying that it canceled all its operations on Wednesday. A total of \u201c295 flights were canceled\u201d and more than 20,000 passengers have been affected, it said, adding that \u201cthe total cost for the company of this measure will exceed $2.5 million.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The Ministry of Security said the country\u2019s \u201cprotocol for maintaining public order in the event of road closures,\u201d also known as the anti-picketing or anti-blockade protocol, would remain in force during the protests.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Asked\u00a0whether it was OK for protesters to block streets, he said: \u201cYes, it is a conflict of rights, and society will have to resolve it. I think it\u2019s fine.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Milei, a political outsider and self-declared \u201canarcho-capitalist,\u201d won Argentina\u2019s presidential election in November, following an unconventional campaign full of big promises to overhaul the country\u2019s beleaguered economy. He famously\u00a0brandished a chainsaw\u00a0at several of his rallies as an illustration of his plans to slash public spending.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Milei has made stamping out hyperinflation his\u00a0top priority.
