White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Friday that he was unsure of a specific \u2018dollar figure\u2019 when asked about the amount of money the U.S. has given to a United Nations agency that is facing allegations that some of its members were involved in Hamas\u2019 October 7 attack on Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kirby made the comment during an exchange with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy after the State Department announced earlier today that the U.S. is \u2018extremely troubled\u2019 by claims that a dozen members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East \u2018may have been involved\u2019 in Hamas\u2019 attack. The State Department has since \u2018temporarily paused additional funding\u2019 for UNRWA pending a review.<\/p>\n

\u2018It certainly looks as if there\u2019s cause to be concerned about the actions of some of the members of UNRWA . . . but that does not and nor should it impugn the entire agency and the entire body of work that they\u2019re doing.\u2019 Kirby said. \u2018They have helped save literally thousands of lives in Gaza. They do important work. [It] doesn\u2019t mean that there aren\u2019t some folks in that group that need to be punished for potentially these kinds of behavior.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018That\u2019s bad, though, if there are 12 people who are accused,\u2019 Doocy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s bad, it\u2019s bad if there\u2019s one. Bad if there\u2019s one,\u2019 Kirby responded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018And the U.S. is giving them money, how much money?\u2019 Doocy then asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018We have suspended the, we have suspended,\u2019 Kirby started saying before Doocy asked, \u2018How much before the suspension?\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t have the dollar figure for you, Peter. I\u2019ll take the question and get back to you. But we have suspended unallocated funds pending the outcome of the investigation,\u2019 Kirby concluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. funding to the agency will resume subject to an investigation from the United Nations. \u00a0<\/p>\n

UNRWA, citing information provided by Israeli authorities, terminated the contract with the accused employees on Friday and announced an investigation \u2018to protect the agency\u2019s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance\u2019 and \u2018establish the truth without delay,\u2019 Reuters reported. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. State Department in a press release said that Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with U.N. Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres regarding the investigation, which will be \u2018comprehensive and independent.\u2019 The U.S. insisted that it must see \u2018complete accountability for anyone who participated in the heinous attacks of Oct. 7.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
