The White House says \u2018developers of the most powerful AI systems\u2019 will now have to report AI safety test results to the Department of Commerce in the wake of an executive order issued by President Biden aimed at \u2018managing the risks\u2019 of the technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The news comes as Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed is convening the White House AI Council on Monday, consisting of \u2018top officials from a wide range of federal departments and agencies\u2019 who have reported completing 90-day actions and advancing other directives tasked by the order Biden signed last\u00a0October, according to the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Among those actions was that they \u2018[u]sed Defense Production Act authorities to compel developers of the most powerful AI systems to report vital information, especially AI safety test results, to the Department of Commerce,\u2019 the White House said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018These companies now must share this information on the most powerful AI systems, and they must likewise report large computing clusters able to train these systems,\u2019 the White House added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The White House added the order is focused on \u2018assessing AI\u2019s risks for critical infrastructure, and hindering foreign actors\u2019 efforts to develop AI for harmful purposes.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ben Buchanan, the White House special adviser on AI, told The Associated Press that the U.S. government wants \u2018to know AI systems are safe before they\u2019re released to the public \u2013 the president has been very clear that companies need to meet that bar.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018We know that AI has transformative effects and potential,\u2019 Buchanan added. \u2018We\u2019re not trying to upend the apple cart there, but we are trying to make sure the regulators are prepared to manage this technology.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
