{"id":14840,"date":"2024-01-30T12:50:38","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T12:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/30\/former-pakistan-prime-minister-imran-khan-sentenced-to-10-years-in-prison\/"},"modified":"2024-01-30T12:50:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T12:50:38","slug":"former-pakistan-prime-minister-imran-khan-sentenced-to-10-years-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/30\/former-pakistan-prime-minister-imran-khan-sentenced-to-10-years-in-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan sentenced to 10 years in prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Pakistan\u2019s former leader Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in\u00a0prison\u00a0for\u00a0leaking state secrets, his\u00a0political\u00a0party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said in a statement Tuesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The hearing took place Tuesday in a closed court established under the Official Secrets Act in Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala Jail, where Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi are already incarcerated on corruption convictions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The pair \u201chave been sentenced 10 years each in a sham case with no access to media or public in Cypher Case,\u201d PTI said, adding their legal team \u201cwill challenge the decision in a higher court\u201d as they hope to get the sentences suspended.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The sentencing is the latest in a string of legal battles faced by Khan and comes ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for February 8 \u2013 a vote the ousted former leader is unable to contest due to his previous conviction.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Tuesday\u2019s sentencing in what is popularly known as the \u201ccypher case\u201d comes after Khan was accused of leaking an encrypted diplomatic cable written by a Pakistani diplomat in March 2022, based on a meeting with a US State Department official.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Khan had claimed the document proved that his ouster in a parliamentary no confidence vote in 2022 was a conspiracy to remove him from power.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The former prime minister repeatedly alleged\u00a0that Pakistani officials conspired with the country\u2019s powerful military and the US to remove him from office. All parties deny Khan\u2019s accusations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      In the weeks after his ouster, Khan drew tens of thousands to nationwide rallies that became a fixture in the country\u2019s volatile political scene, with his supporters thronging the streets in his defense.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Since then, the cricket icon turned politician has faced a litany of legal issues \u2014 and has dozens of pending cases against him.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Khan has been behind bars since August after he was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to three years in prison. <strong> <\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Despite being unable to stand in the upcoming vote, he remains a major political force owing to his widespread popularity.
