{"id":15590,"date":"2024-02-15T12:48:09","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T12:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/15\/record-18-nato-states-expected-to-meet-2-defense-spending-threshold-this-year\/"},"modified":"2024-02-15T12:48:09","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T12:48:09","slug":"record-18-nato-states-expected-to-meet-2-defense-spending-threshold-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/15\/record-18-nato-states-expected-to-meet-2-defense-spending-threshold-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Record 18 NATO states expected to meet 2% defense spending threshold this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Eighteen of NATO\u2019s 31 members are expected to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense this year, the treaty organization\u2019s leader said on Wednesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cThat is another record number and a six-fold increase from 2014 when only three allies met their target,\u201d NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday ahead of a meeting between the alliance\u2019s defense ministers in Brussels.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Former US President Donald Trump, who is running for reelection in November, brought renewed scrutiny to the issue of defense spending among NATO members last weekend, when he said at a rally he would encourage Russia to do \u201cwhatever the hell they want\u201d to any NATO member country that doesn\u2019t meet spending guidelines on defense \u2013 effectively undercutting the collective defense clause at the heart of the treaty.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Stoltenberg said Monday such comments put European and American soldiers at an increased risk.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cAny suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the US, and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk,\u201d Stoltenberg said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            The NATO chief acknowledged on Wednesday that criticism of members not spending enough was \u201ca valid point \u2026 and a message that has been conveyed by successive US administrations, that European Allies and Canada have to spend more, because we haven\u2019t seen fair burden sharing in the alliance.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            To better share that burden, NATO members pledged a decade ago to increase their defense spending to 2% of GDP for each country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Among the countries to hit the target recently is Germany.
