Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u00a0pressed partner nations for more military assistance\u00a0to\u00a0Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference in Germany Saturday, amid signs of the war turning in Russia\u2019s favour. <\/p>\n

His plea came soon after Ukrainian forces announced their withdrawal from the key eastern town of Avdiivka. <\/p>\n

A $60 billion US military aid package has been held up in Congress since December, with the passage of a supplemental funding bill blocked by Senate Republicans earlier this month. Europe is also struggling to send what it had pledged. <\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately keeping Ukraine in the artificial deficit of weapons, particularly in deficit of artillery and long-range capabilities, allows Putin\u00a0to\u00a0adapt\u00a0to\u00a0the current intensity of the war,\u201d Zelensky said, adding the \u201cself-weakening of democracy over time undermines our joint results.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIf we have enough air defense systems, we can bring millions of Ukrainians home,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Zelensky said the situation in Avdiivka proved \u201cexactly\u201d that Ukraine\u2019s actions are \u201climited only by the sufficiency and lengths of the range of our strength.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect what was promised, what we agreed on, that we will be able\u00a0to\u00a0unblock the sky, where the Russian Federation has the advantage,\u201d Zelensky added. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is\u00a0essential\u00a0to\u00a0unblock the sky\u2026Where there are air defense systems, Russia immediately withdrew because they were losing aircraft. These systems will unlock the sky and enable our soldiers\u00a0to\u00a0move forward,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n

Zelensky also said he was \u201cready\u00a0to\u00a0go\u201d\u00a0to\u00a0the frontline with Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think if we are in dialogue on how to finish the war, we have to demonstrate [to] people who are decision makers, what does it mean: the real world. Not in Instagram. Real world,\u201d Zelensky said. <\/p>\n

Last year, Zelensky\u00a0opened the Munich Security Conference\u00a0with an impassioned video address\u00a0pleading for faster\u00a0weapons\u00a0to\u00a0repel Russian forces. This year, he attended in person for the first time since Russia\u2019s full scale of invasion almost two years ago. <\/p>\n

Later, after meeting US Vice President Kamala Harris, urging Congress to pass the funding. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, this package is vital,\u201d he said. \u201cWe do not currently look into alternatives because we are counting on the United States.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is only plan A, which is to ensure that Ukraine receives what it needs,\u201d Harris said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI will emphasize that an indication of where we can and frankly must be is that there is bipartisan support in both of our houses of Congress.\u201d <\/p>\n\n
