{"id":16430,"date":"2024-03-05T00:46:45","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T00:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/05\/children-starve-to-death-in-gaza-palestinian-officials-say-as-israel-hamas-ceasefire-deal-sticking-points-remain\/"},"modified":"2024-03-05T00:46:45","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T00:46:45","slug":"children-starve-to-death-in-gaza-palestinian-officials-say-as-israel-hamas-ceasefire-deal-sticking-points-remain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/05\/children-starve-to-death-in-gaza-palestinian-officials-say-as-israel-hamas-ceasefire-deal-sticking-points-remain\/","title":{"rendered":"Children starve to death in Gaza, Palestinian officials say,\u00a0as Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal sticking points remain"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            A growing number of children in Gaza are dying from dehydration and malnutrition, the Palestinian health ministry said Sunday, amid desperate conditions due to Israel\u2019s throttling of aid and destruction of the besieged enclave \u2014 reinforcing the urgency of this week\u2019s ceasefire talks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            The official said the reason was that Hamas had not responded to two\u00a0Israeli demands: a list of Israeli hostages specifying which are alive and which are dead; and confirmation of the ratio of Palestinian prisoners to be released from\u00a0Israeli prisons, in exchange for the hostages taken when Hamas militants attacked communities\u00a0in\u00a0southern\u00a0Israel on October 7.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            It comes as the United States is increasingly vocal about the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where the United Nations warns hundreds of thousands of people\u00a0are on the brink of famine and US ally Israel continues to\u00a0obstruct the bulk of aid deliveries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            On Saturday, the US made its first humanitarian airdrop into the strip \u2014 66 bundles containing meals but no water or medical supplies, a US official said. Aid groups have criticized the air drops as an ineffective and degrading way to get aid to Palestinians in Gaza, with the International Crisis Group\u2019s UN director saying they are at best a \u201ctemporary Band-Aid measure.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            One of the strongest rebukes of Israel by a US official to date came from US Vice President\u00a0Kamala Harris, who on Sunday forcefully called for more humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying that people in the region are \u201cstarving\u201d in the face of \u201cinhumane\u201d conditions and urged Israel to do more.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            She called for an \u201cimmediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks,\u201d a proposal currently on the negotiating table, and urged Hamas to free Israeli hostages.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cWhat we are seeing every day in Gaza is devastating. We have seen reports of families eating leaves or animal feed. Women giving birth to malnourished babies with little or no medical care, and children dying from malnutrition and dehydration,\u201d Harris said, citing the deaths of dozens of Palestinians amid Israeli gunfire and panic at Gaza food lines.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cThe Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses,\u201d said Harris.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Her comments also come at a critical moment in the\u00a0Israel-Hamas war. On Monday, the vice president is expected to meet with a key member of the Israeli War Cabinet, Benny Gantz, in Washington as the US continues to advocate a temporary ceasefire and hostage release.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">    Children starving to death<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            In northern Gaza, children are starving to death and others fighting for their lives as critical supplies are held up from reaching those in need.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            A\u00a0Palestinian Ministry of Health\u00a0spokesperson said Sunday the number of children who have died of  dehydration and malnutrition in northern Gaza\u00a0has risen to 15.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            A further 124 people were killed over the past 24 hours, the Gaza Ministry of Health said Monday, bringing the death toll in the enclave since October 7 to 30,534.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Doctors at the Kamal Adwan Hospital also \u201cfear for the lives of\u00a0six\u00a0children suffering from malnutrition and diarrhea in intensive care as a result of the cessation of the electric generator and oxygen and the weakness of medical\u00a0capabilities,\u201d Dr. Ashraf Al-Qidra,\u00a0the\u00a0Ministry spokesman\u00a0in Gaza,\u00a0said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            The death toll has been rising since last week when incubators and oxygen supplies at Kamal Adwan Hospital ceased to operate at night because of fuel shortages, the ministry said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            One recent incident exposed the particularly desperate situation in northern Gaza.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            More than 100 people\u00a0were killed\u00a0last week when Israeli troops\u00a0opened fire\u00a0on crowds, triggering panic as hungry Palestinian civilians were gathering around food aid trucks, Palestinian officials and eyewitnesses said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            Israel said its troops fired warning shots to disperse the crowd. A UN team that visited victims said many suffered gunshot wounds.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            The United Nations children\u2019s agency has called for urgent action, requesting\u00a0\u201cmultiple reliable entry points\u201d to allow them to bring aid.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cHumanitarian aid agencies like UNICEF must be enabled to reverse the humanitarian crisis, prevent a famine, and save children\u2019s lives,\u201d\u00a0UNICEF\u2019s Adele Khodr\u00a0said in a statement Sunday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            UNICEF said it was aware of at least 10 children dying due to dehydration and malnutrition in recent days at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cThere are likely more children fighting for their lives somewhere in one of Gaza\u2019s few remaining hospitals, and likely even more children in the north unable to obtain care at all,\u201d Khodr added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            She\u00a0described the situation as \u201cman-made, predictable, and entirely preventable,\u201d and warned the death toll among children could rapidly increase unless immediate action is taken.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cThe widespread lack of nutritious food, safe water and medical services, a direct consequence of the impediments to\u00a0access and multiple dangers facing UN humanitarian operations,\u00a0is impacting children and mothers, hindering their ability to breastfeed their babies, especially in the northern Gaza Strip,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">            \u201cPeople are hungry, exhausted and traumatized.
