President Biden on Saturday said that the U.S. doesn\u2019t have a \u2018red line\u2019 with Israel over its actions in the war with Hamas that would leave the Middle Eastern country unprotected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018I am never going to leave Israel,\u2019 the president told MSNBC\u2019s Jonathan Capehart in a wide-ranging interview. \u2018The defense of Israel is still critical. There\u2019s no red line [where] I\u2019m going to cut off all weapons, so they don\u2019t have the Iron Dome to protect them.\u2019<\/p>\n

Biden was clarifying a hot mic comment from Thursday night after delivering the State of the Union address in which he was caught saying he planned a \u2018come-to-Jesus\u2019 talk with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his handling of the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018He has a right to defend Israel, a right to continue to pursue Hamas, but he must, he must, he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken,\u2019 Biden told Capehart.<\/p>\n

He said in \u2018his view\u2019 that Netanyahu is \u2018hurting Israel more than he\u2019s helping Israel \u2026 It\u2019s contrary to what he stands for. I think it\u2019s a big mistake so I want to see a ceasefire.\u2019<\/p>\n

The president added that he was aiming for a \u2018major, major\u2019 exchange of hostages over a six-week period heading into the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which starts Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That appears increasingly unlikely as Hamas has balked at a deal pushed by the U.S. and its allies that would have seen fighting paused along with the release of additional hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, and a surge in humanitarian aid into Gaza.<\/p>\n

The president added, however, there would be \u2018red lines that if he crosses \u2013 you cannot have 30,000 more Palestinians dead.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said there\u2019s \u2018other ways to deal with the trauma caused by Hamas\u2019 while avoiding civilian casualties. He said he told the Israeli war cabinet to not make the same mistake the U.S. did decades ago when it went into Iraq and Afghanistan on the hunt for Osama bin Laden after 9\/11.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018It wasn\u2019t necessary, and it just caused more problems than it erased.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added that the U.S. plans to do \u2018everything it can\u2019 to get more humanitarian aid into Gaza for civilians suffering in the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Biden has for months warned that Israel risks losing international support over mounting civilian casualties in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The president also said he \u2018understands\u2019 Pro-Palestinian Democrats who protest voted \u2018uncommitted\u2019 against him in some Democratic primary states over his support of Israel.<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t blame them for being upset. Their family\u2019s there, there are people who are dying. They want something done about it, and they\u2019re saying, \u2018Joe, do something, do something.\u2019<\/p>\n

He continued, \u2018I can fully understand, can\u2019t you? You have a family member there or come from a family that is still isolated there and maybe victimized. It\u2019s understandable they feel that way and that\u2019s why I\u2019m doing everything I can to try to stop it.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
