Pope Francis has sparked anger after saying Ukraine should have the \u201ccourage of the white flag\u201d and negotiate to end the war with Russia. <\/p>\n

In an interview with Swiss broadcaster Radio T\u00e9l\u00e9vision Suisse (RTS) published on Saturday, Francis was asked whether he thinks negotiations would \u201clegitimize the stronger party.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThat is one interpretation,\u201d he replied. \u201cBut I believe that the stronger one is the one who sees the situation, who thinks of the people, who has the courage of the white flag, to negotiate.\u201d The pope added, \u201cand today, negotiations are possible with the help of international powers.\u201d <\/p>\n

The comments brought a swift response from Kyiv, which has seen tens of thousands killed and is seeking to recapture all its territory seized by Russia. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur flag is a yellow and blue one. This is the flag by which we live, die, and prevail. We shall never raise any other flags,\u201d Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a post on social media Sunday. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe strongest is the one who, in the battle between good and evil, stands on the side of good rather than attempting to put them on the same footing and call it \u2018negotiations\u2019,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Speaking to Ukrainians in New York on Saturday, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, said \u201cUkraine is wounded, but unconquered\u201d and that no one is thinking about making concessions. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to tell you one thing from the people of Ukraine,\u201d Father Sviatoslav said, according to a statement from the Greek Catholic Church. \u201cUkraine is exhausted, but it is standing and will stand! Believe me, no one even thinks of surrender, even in the places where fighting is ongoing today,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Later on Saturday, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, clarified to journalists the pope\u2019s comments, saying \u201cthe Pope picked up the image of the white flag, proposed by the interviewer, to indicate a cessation of hostilities, a truce reached with the courage of negotiation,\u201d and not surrender as some may have interpreted his remarks, Vatican News reported. <\/p>\n

Other European leaders also condemned Francis\u2019s comments. <\/p>\n

\u201cHow about, for balance, encouraging Putin to have the courage to withdraw his army from Ukraine,\u201d Poland\u2019s Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski said Sunday in a post on X. \u201cPeace would immediately ensue without the need for negotiations.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMy Sunday morning take: One must not capitulate in [the] face of evil, one must fight it and defeat it, so that the evil raises the white flag and capitulates,\u201d Latvia\u2019s President Edgars Rink\u0113vi\u010ds said in a post on X. <\/p>\n

Alexandra Valkenburg, the head of the EU delegation to the Holy See, said on X on Sunday that \u201cRussia started an illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine two years ago\u201d and Russia \u201ccan end this war immediately\u201d by respecting Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity. <\/p>\n\n
