Niger\u2019s\u00a0military\u00a0government\u00a0announced that it has ended an\u00a0accord\u00a0with\u00a0the US that allowed\u00a0military\u00a0personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate in\u00a0Niger \u2013 days after holding high-level talks with US diplomatic and military officials this week. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0government\u00a0of\u00a0Niger, taking into account the aspirations and interests of its people, decides\u00a0with\u00a0full responsibility to denounce\u00a0with\u00a0immediate effect the agreement relating to the\u00a0status of\u00a0military\u00a0personnel of the\u00a0United\u00a0States\u00a0and civilian employees of the American Department of Defense in the territory of the Republic of\u00a0Niger,\u201d Niger military\u00a0spokesman Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane said in a statement on national television announcing the change. <\/p>\n

Abdramane added that the agreement between the two countries \u2013 signed in 2012, was imposed on\u00a0Niger\u00a0and had been in violation of the \u201cconstitutional and democratic rules\u201d of the West African nation\u2019s sovereignty. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis agreement is not only profoundly unfair in its substance but it also does not meet the aspirations and interests of the\u00a0Nigerien people,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Niger\u00a0was once a key regional partner for the US, but relations have deteriorated since the\u00a0military\u00a0junta claimed power in July 2023 in\u00a0what the US formally designated as a coup. <\/p>\n

Since then, the US has\u00a0withdrawn many of its 1,100 troops who were stationed in\u00a0Niger. <\/p>\n

Senior Pentagon officials believe that keeping a presence in Niger is vital to efforts to tackle terrorism in the region. In October, the Pentagon said it was still assessing how the change would impact approximately 1,000 US forces stationed in the country. <\/p>\n

In a\u00a0letter sent to Congress\u00a0in December 2023, President Joe Biden noted that approximately 648 US\u00a0military\u00a0personnel remain deployed to\u00a0Niger. <\/p>\n

\u2018Condescending attitude\u2019<\/h2>\n

The announcement comes after a senior US delegation\u2019s three-day visit to\u00a0Niger this week. <\/p>\n

Abdramane said\u00a0that the US delegation was received out of \u201ccourtesy\u201d and \u201cdid not respect diplomatic practices\u201d by not providing information regarding the date of its arrival, the composition of the delegation and the purpose of the visit. <\/p>\n

During meetings,\u00a0Nigerien and American officials discussed the\u00a0military\u00a0transition in\u00a0Niger\u00a0and\u00a0military cooperation between the two countries, Abdramane said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0government\u00a0of\u00a0Niger\u00a0regrets the desire of the American delegation to deny the\u00a0Nigerien people the right to choose their partners and the types of partnerships capable of helping them truly fight against terrorists,\u201d Abdramane said. <\/p>\n

Abdramane\u00a0said\u00a0Niger\u00a0\u201cforcefully denounces the condescending attitude\u201d of the US. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis attitude is likely to undermine the quality of our centuries-old relations and undermine the trust between our two\u00a0governments,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

He also rejected what he said were allegations of a secret deal made between\u00a0Niger, Russia, and Iran. <\/p>\n\n
