{"id":17134,"date":"2024-03-19T12:48:12","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T12:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/19\/biden-speaks-with-netanyahu-as-us-israel-tensions-escalate-over-direction-of-hamas-war\/"},"modified":"2024-03-19T12:48:12","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T12:48:12","slug":"biden-speaks-with-netanyahu-as-us-israel-tensions-escalate-over-direction-of-hamas-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/19\/biden-speaks-with-netanyahu-as-us-israel-tensions-escalate-over-direction-of-hamas-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden speaks with Netanyahu as US-Israel tensions escalate over direction of Hamas war"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paywall has-gated-overlay gated-article-body\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">President Biden spoke Monday morning with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as tensions between the U.S. and Israel are escalating over the direction of the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The call between the two leaders, which was the first since Feb. 15, came after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer delivered a speech Thursday calling for Netanyahu\u2019s ouster and labeling him an \u2018obstacle to peace.\u2019 The next day, Biden described Schumer\u2019s remarks as a \u2018good speech\u2019 that \u2018expressed serious concern shared not only by him, but by many Americans.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018President Biden spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to discuss the latest developments in Israel and Gaza, including the situation in Rafah and efforts to surge humanitarian assistance to Gaza,\u2019 the White House Press Office said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu had issued a sharp rebuttal to Schumer on Sunday, saying during an interview on \u2018Fox &amp; Friends Weekend\u2019 that his comments on the Senate floor were \u2018wholly inappropriate.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think we\u2019re not a banana republic. The people of Israel will choose when they\u2019ll have elections, who they elect, and it\u2019s not something that will be foisted upon us,\u2019 Netanyahu added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The majority leader had said he believed that \u2018Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take the precedence over the best interests of Israel.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s wrong to try to replace the elected leaders of a sister democracy and a staunch American ally at any time, but especially during the time of war,\u2019 Netanyahu countered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>White House national security communications adviser John Kirby brushed off questioning Sunday regarding whether Biden believes Netanyahu is an \u2018impediment to peace,\u2019 saying the two world leaders have \u2018known each other a long time\u2019 and have an open line of communication.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Does the president think that Benjamin Netanyahu is a bigot? That he\u2019s an impediment to peace? That he should be lumped in with Hamas?\u2019 Fox News\u2019 Shannon Bream asked Kirby on \u2018Fox News Sunday.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kirby did not explicitly answer, instead highlighting that the two world leaders have long known each other and that the U.S. respects Israel\u2019s sovereignty. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These are two men, leaders that have known each other a long time, Shannon, and they don\u2019t agree on everything \u2013 haven\u2019t over 40 years. And there are certain aspects to the prosecution of operations in Gaza, where we obviously don\u2019t agree with everything that Israel has done. But they have a relationship where they can talk to one another, and they do, and they will again. He is the prime minister of Israel.
