Parts of Haiti \u2013 including an area outside the U.S. embassy \u2013 have now plunged into darkness following attacks by vandals on a power plant and four power substations in Port-au-Prince, the country\u2019s national utility says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00c9lectricit\u00e9 D\u2019Ha\u00efti (EDH) said in a statement on X that \u2018several of the company\u2019s premises were sabotaged,\u2019 numerous materials were damaged and documents were destroyed \u2018during the latest acts of vandalism perpetrated in recent weeks.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Such acts of theft and sabotage only further worsen the financial and technical situation of the company,\u2019 it added, noting that\u00a0four power substations and the Varreux Power Plant in Port-au-Prince were \u2018destroyed and made completely dysfunctional,\u2019 cutting off electricity to dozens of areas including the \u2018USA Embassy Entrance\u2019 and a local hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Important documents, electrical installations, cables, inverters, batteries as well as computer and office equipment were taken by these thugs,\u2019 EDH also said. Authorities are working to restore power to the affected areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The development comes after the State Department revealed Monday that nearly 1,000 Americans have filled out a \u2018crisis intake form\u2019 seeking assistance in Haiti.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018It is not hyperbole to say that this is one of the most dire humanitarian situations in the world,\u2019 State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said. \u2018Gang violence continues to make the security situation in Haiti untenable, and it is a region that demands our attention.\u2019 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018This is a fluid situation and the number of individuals who have reached out to us through the crisis intake form is approaching a thousand,\u2019 he added, referring to the form on the State Department\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018And we\u2019re continuing to monitor the situation closely and evaluate the demand of U.S. citizens, evaluate the overall security situation, evaluate what is feasible when it comes to commercial transportation options, what is feasible for other transportation solutions,\u2019 Patel also said, emphasizing that \u2018we have no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens.\u2019 \u00a0<\/p>\n

The State Department previously has said it is aware of several hundred U.S. citizens being stuck in Haiti.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
