There are \u201creasonable grounds\u201d to believe Israel is \u201ccommitting the crime of genocide against the Palestinians as a group in Gaza,\u201d the United Nations\u2019 Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories has said. <\/p>\n
Francesca Albanese made the remarks Wednesday following the submission of her latest\u00a0report\u00a0called \u201cAnatomy of a Genocide\u201d to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday. <\/p>\n
Speaking at a press conference, Albanese said: \u201cIsrael has committed three acts of genocide with a requisite intent: killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, and deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.\u201d <\/p>\n
Israel said it \u201cutterly rejects\u201d the report, which it said \u201cbrings shame\u201d on the Human Rights Council. <\/p>\n
It is \u201cno surprise, that the premise of this report is that the creation of the Jewish State in 1948 was an act of \u2018settler colonialism,\u2019 and genocide is an \u2018inherent part\u2019 of that act,\u201d the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations in Geneva said in a statement on X on Monday. <\/p>\n
The statement also blamed the UN expert for \u201cdelegitimising the very creation and existence of the State of Israel.\u201d <\/p>\n
Albanese said there had been \u201cflagrant and systematic slaughter of Palestinian civilians,\u201d as well as \u201cthe deployment of unlawful weaponry, the utter obliteration of vital civilian infrastructure including the deliberate targeting of all Gaza\u2019s hospitals, and the man-made starvation of the Palestinian people.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cThe monstrosity unfolding is accompanied by a pervasive anti-Palestinian narrative and dehumanization emanating from the uppermost tiers of Israeli society, including high-ranking officials with command authority and frequently reflected in soldiers\u2019 actions on the ground,\u201d Albanese told the press conference, before adding that this reflected intent \u201cto destroy in whole or in part, which is what distinguishes genocide from other atrocity crimes.\u201d <\/p>\n
The UN special rapporteur concluded the \u201conly reasonable inference that can be drawn\u201d is an \u201cIsraeli state policy of genocidal violence toward the Palestinian people in Gaza.\u201d <\/p>\n
She said one of the report\u2019s \u201ckey findings\u201d was that \u201cIsrael\u2019s executive and military leadership and soldiers have intentionally distorted \u2018jus in bello\u2019 principles, subverting their protective functions, in an attempt to legitimize genocidal violence against the Palestinian people.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cJus in bello\u201d (justice in war) is the Latin term that refers to international laws that govern the way warfare is conducted. <\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s diplomatic mission in Geneva in its response also said, \u201cthe very attempt to level the charge of genocide against Israel is an outrageous distortion of the Genocide Convention.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cIsrael\u2019s war is against Hamas, not against Palestinian civilians,\u201d it added. <\/p>\n\n
