Biden reportedly told Netanyahu the U.S. wouldn\u2019t support any retaliatory attack, according to Axios.<\/p>\n

John Kirby, the White House\u2019s top national security spokesperson, told ABC\u2019s \u2018This Week\u2019 program on Sunday, April 14 that the United States will continue to help Israel defend itself, but does not want war with Iran.<\/p>\n
Kirby said \u2018our commitment is ironclad\u2019 to defending Israel and to \u2018helping Israel defend itself,\u2019 after being asked if the U.S. would support retaliation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Kirby doubled-down on the fact that Biden does not \u2018seek\u2019 war with Iran.<\/p>\n
\u2018And as the president has said many times, we don\u2019t seek a wider war in the region. We don\u2019t seek a war with Iran. And I think I will leave it at that,\u2019 Kirby added.<\/p>\n
\u2018We don\u2019t seek escalated tensions in the region. We don\u2019t seek a wider conflict,\u2019 Kirby said.<\/p>\n
Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder echoed Kirby\u2019s sentiments, sharing in a press briefing that the U.S. does \u2018not want to see a wider regional war.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018As I\u2019ve highlighted, we do not seek escalation in the region, but we will not hesitate to defend Israel and protect our personnel,\u2019 he said during the question and answer segment of the briefing.<\/p>\n
\u2018Again, we do not want to see a wider regional war,\u2019 he added. \u2018We don\u2019t seek conflict with Iran, but we won\u2019t hesitate to take [the] necessary actions to protect our forces.\u2019<\/p>\n
Reports of Israel\u2019s \u2018limited strike\u2019 against Iran came following a retaliatory strike over the weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Iran attacked Israel over the weekend in retaliation for a deadly strike on Iran\u2019s consulate in Syria earlier this month that killed a dozen people, including a top general. Israel has not publicly claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n
The weekend attack by Iran marked a major escalation of violence. Despite decades of hostilities between the two nations, Iran has never directly attacked Israel, instead relying on proxy forces in Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n
