He said Trump\u2019s rise created a rift between libertarian-leaning conservatives and the MAGA-style populism of Trump supporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A lot of our base aged, and so the new activists that have come in [with] Trump, they tend to be much more populist,\u2019 Brandon told the outlet. \u2018So, you look at the base that just kind of shifted.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The shift, he said, was seen even in FreedomWorks\u2019 own members, which divided into MAGA and \u2018Never Trump factions.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This impacted the group\u2019s ability to raise money, noting that donors are increasingly asking: \u2018What are you doing for Trump today?\u2019 Still, others complained that the group was doing too much to help the former president, putting Brandon in an impossible position.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018[W]e\u2019re not for or against Trump,\u2019 said FreedomWorks\u2019 board member Paul Beckner, according to Politico. \u2018We\u2019re for Trump if he\u2019s doing what we agree with, and we\u2019re against if he\u2019s not.
