Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said President Biden\u2019s recent threat to withhold munitions shipments to Israel was completely unexpected and probably \u2018off script.\u2019<\/p>\n
Biden said in a Wednesday CNN interview that his administration will halt munitions shipments to Israel if the nation continues with plans to invade the city of Rafah.<\/p>\n
\u2018My reaction honestly was \u2014 \u2018Wow, that is a complete turn from what I have been told even in, you know, recent hours,\u2019\u2019 Johnson told Politico in a Wednesday night interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018I mean, 24 hours ago it was confirmed to me by top administration officials that the policy\u2019s very different than what he stated there,\u2019 he continued. \u2018So I hope that\u2019s a senior moment.\u2019<\/p>\n
Johnson said he was already troubled by reports that U.S. support to Israel could be delayed before Biden\u2019s interview. He told Politico that Biden administration officials dismissed his concerns and said delays were occurring with prior tranches of weapons, not aid recently passed by the House.<\/p>\n
Johnson speculated that Biden\u2019s comments may have been a \u2018senior moment\u2019 and at odds with the rest of the administration\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n
\u2018I believe he\u2019s off script,\u2019 Johnson said. \u2018I don\u2019t think that\u2019s something that staff told him to say. I hope it\u2019s a senior moment, because that would be a great deviation in what is said to be the policy there.\u2019<\/p>\n
Biden told CNN\u2019s Erin Burnett in the Wednesday interview that civilian deaths in Gaza have given him pause on supplying weapons for the planned Rafah invasion.<\/p>\n
\u2018Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers,\u2019 the president said.<\/p>\n
\u2018I made it clear that if they go into Rafah \u2014 they haven\u2019t gone in Rafah yet \u2014 if they go into Rafah, I\u2019m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities \u2014 that deal with that problem,\u2019 Biden said.<\/p>\n
