British Foreign Secretary David Cameron reportedly discussed with former President Trump \u2013 the presumptive Republican presidential nominee \u2013 a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to a source who spoke to The Sunday Times, Cameron met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida last month and told the former president that new U.S. aid would help Ukraine hold its front lines and give Trump the \u2018best possible conditions\u2019 to attempt to secure an agreement with Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The source reportedly said that Cameron asked Trump: \u2018What are the best conditions in which you as president can make a deal in January? It\u2019s both sides holding their lines and paying a price for that.\u2019<\/p>\n
That contradicts the United Kingdom\u2019s position that a peace agreement would be a Ukrainian matter, and Cameron has said publicly that \u2018peace comes through strength, not through appeasement and weakness.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked about the report Monday afternoon, a spokesperson for U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Britain\u2019s \u2018position has not changed\u2019 and that \u2018Putin must fail.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018It is crucial, now more than ever in this conflict, that Putin is sent a very clear message that we will support Ukraine for as long as is necessary,\u2019 the spokesperson said. \u2018I\u2019ve seen some anonymous source briefing. We do not recognize those reports.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Reporters also pressed Sunak about the report in central London on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018I haven\u2019t seen this Sunday Times article, so forgive me for that,\u2019 Sunak said, according to Politico. \u2018But what I can tell you is that you we have led when it comes to Ukraine.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Investment in Ukraine\u2019s security is investment in our security. Our NATO allies are already worried about the prospect of if Putin succeeds, that they\u2019ll be next \u2013 \u00a0with all the consequences that would bring,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n
Cameron said last month the meeting \u2018was entirely in line with precedent with government ministers meeting with opposition politicians,\u2019 adding that he and Trump discussed a \u2018range of important geopolitical subjects\u2019 and that a victory for Ukraine is \u2018vital for American and European security.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a statement in April, Trump\u2019s campaign said the meeting was held \u2018to discuss several issues impacting both countries,\u2019 including upcoming elections in both Britain and the United States, the implications of Britain\u2019s withdrawal from the European Union, the need for NATO allies to meet their commitments on defense spending and \u2018ending the killing in Ukraine.\u2019<\/p>\n
