Hours after the release of several seemingly damning emails revealing his provocative COVID-era communications, a former top adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci offered excuses and apologies \u2014 but few real answers \u2014 during a contentious congressional showdown.<\/p>\n

Dr. David Morens, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) senior adviser, appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability on Wednesday afternoon with few insights about the alarming messages but a host of apologies to lawmakers. The newly released emails detail interactions between Morens and Dr. Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance, a non-governmental organization that funded coronavirus research in Wuhan, China.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s just something I\u2019m very ashamed that I can\u2019t put the toothpaste back in the tube,\u2019 Morens said of the emails\u2019 language, much of which he attributed to being just \u2018black humor.\u2019<\/p>\n

Republican lawmakers accuse Morens of deleting emails and using his personal email account to skirt Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.<\/p>\n

In one of the newly released emails to Daszak, Morens said he \u2018learned from our FOIA lady here how to make emails disappear after I am FOIA\u2019d, but before the search starts. So I think we are all safe. Plus I deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to Gmail.\u2019<\/p>\n

During Wednesday\u2019s testimony, Morens said \u2018that was a joke\u2019 when House Rep. Richard McCormick, R-Ga., asked what he learned from the \u2018FOIA lady.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Are you sure about that? We can subpoena her email too,\u2019 McCormick responded. \u2018You said she gave you advice\u2026 so you were lying then but telling us the truth now?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I wasn\u2019t lying, I was making a joke. I said something like, \u2018I have a way to make it go away.\u2019 But that was just a euphemism,\u2019 Morens responded.<\/p>\n

Morens also wrote from his personal email account to Daszak, saying, \u2018We are all smart enough to know to never have smoking guns and if we did, we wouldn\u2019t put them in emails. And if we found them, we would delete them.\u2019<\/p>\n

Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., asked Morens if he \u2018deleted any records\u2019 or had conversations with Fauci regarding deletions.<\/p>\n

\u2018Not to my knowledge,\u2019 Morens said. \u2018But again, we\u2019re at the issue of defining what\u2019s a federal record? I deleted a lot of emails. I do it every day.\u2019<\/p>\n

At one point in the hearing, Morens offered: \u2018I don\u2019t know what to say except I\u2019m sorry.\u2019<\/p>\n

In other released emails, Morens appeared to express concerns about what was being sent to his work email and what was sent to his personal email, informing those on the email chain that they did not need to worry and that he would \u2018delete anything I don\u2019t want to see in the New York Times.\u2019 It is not clear if any deletions actually occurred.<\/p>\n

\u2018As you know, I try to always communicate on gmail because my NIH email is FOIA\u2019d constantly,\u2019 Morens wrote in a September 2021 email, which was sent at the time to many scientists involved in the debate about the origins of the COVID-19 virus. \u2018Stuff sent to my gmail gets to my phone \u2026 but not my NIH computer.\u2019<\/p>\n
