The former Mexico City mayor said that her two competitors \u2013 X\u00f3chitl G\u00e1lvez and Jorge \u00c1lvarez M\u00e1ynez \u2013 had called her and conceded. \u00a0<\/p>\n
The National Electoral Institute\u2019s president said Sheinbaum had between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, according to a statistical sample. Opposition candidate G\u00e1lvez had between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote, and \u00c1lvarez M\u00e1ynez had between 9.9% and 10.8% of the vote. Sheinbaum\u2019s Morena Party was also projected to hold majorities in both chambers of Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n
President Biden said Monday that \u2018I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first woman President of Mexico\u2019 and that he looks forward \u2018to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries.<\/p>\n
\u2018I also congratulate the Mexican people for conducting a nationwide successful democratic electoral process involving races for more than 20,000 positions at the local, state, and federal levels,\u2019 Biden added.<\/p>\n
Sheinbaum, the AP reports, will also be the first Jewish leader of the overwhelmingly Catholic country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She will start her six-year term on Oct. 1. Mexico\u2019s constitution does not allow re-election.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The leftist has said she believes the government has a strong role to play in addressing economic inequality and providing a sturdy social safety net, much like her political mentor President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, who is also a member of the Morena Party.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Of course, I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum with all my respect who ended up the winner by a wide margin,\u2019 L\u00f3pez Obrador said Monday. \u2018She is going to be Mexico\u2019s first (woman) president in 200 years.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
The main opposition candidate, G\u00e1lvez, a tech entrepreneur and former senator, had promised to take a more aggressive approach toward organized crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In her concession speech, she said, \u2018I want to stress that my recognition (of Sheinbaum\u2019s victory) comes with a firm demand for results and solutions to the country\u2019s serious problems.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Julio Garc\u00eda, a Mexico City office worker, had told the AP he was voting for the opposition in Mexico City\u2019s central San Rafael neighborhood. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018They\u2019ve robbed me twice at gunpoint. You have to change direction, change leadership,\u2019 the 34-year-old was quoted as saying. \u2018Continuing the same way, we\u2019re going to become Venezuela.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
