Olga Carmona, the Spanish soccer star who scored the winning goal in the Women\u2019s World Cup final, said it made her \u201cangry\u201d that Luis Rubiales\u2019 unwanted kiss on teammate Jennifer Hermoso overshadowed the team\u2019s historic victory. <\/p>\n
Following weeks of fierce criticism, Rubiales resigned from his position as president of the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) on Sunday, saying that he \u201cwon\u2019t contribute anything positive [to RFEF or Spanish soccer]\u201d were he to remain in the role. <\/p>\n
Speaking to Spanish late-night talk show El Hormiguero on Monday, Carmona said that she felt \u201cmost angry\u201d about the fact that Rubiales had kissed her teammate Hermoso on \u201ca day that was not appropriate.\u201d <\/p>\n
The 46-year-old previously apologized and described the kiss as \u201cmutual,\u201d though\u00a0Hermoso denied that claim, saying she did not consent and was not respected. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is obviously sad that we achieved something historic, something that really takes a lot of work to achieve and that it was overshadowed because of what we all know happened,\u201d Carmona said. <\/p>\n
\u201cYes, it does make me angry and I think that hopefully from\u00a0now they\u2019ll talk about how we are world champions.\u201d <\/p>\n
When asked if she had spoken with Hermoso, Carmona confirmed she had not. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe do have a close relationship, but I understand what she\u2019s going through, so I haven\u2019t talked to her,\u201d the Real Madrid star added. \u201cI understand that it\u2019s a difficult situation. No one likes getting attention\u00a0for having something like that happen.\u201d <\/p>\n
Carmona was one of more than 80 Spanish soccer players to sign a letter supporting Hermoso, which said that the players would not return to the national team \u201cif the current leaders continue\u201d in their posts. <\/p>\n
Carmona said that she was still undecided if she would return now that Rubiales has resigned and head coach Jorge Vilda has been sacked \u2013 being replaced with Montse Tom\u00e9, the first woman to ever hold the role \u2013 as part of the shake-up in Spanish soccer. <\/p>\n
\u201cWell, there\u2019s been more than Rubiales\u2019 resignation, there\u2019s also been other changes, we have a new coach,\u201d Carmona said. \u201cFirst of all, we have to wait for the call list and see if I\u2019m on it or not and see what happens from there. <\/p>\n
\u201cRubiales\u2019 resignation is still very recent, it only happened last night, and so we have to discuss as a group and see what happens.\u201d <\/p>\n
On Monday, European soccer governing body UEFA released a statement acknowledging Rubiales\u2019 resignation and the \u201cthe public discourse\u201d surrounding him and his recent actions. It also thanked Rubiales for his many years of service to European football. <\/p>\n
UEFA\u2019s statement was released hours after the governing body hosted a group of women, including two-time Ballon d\u2019Or F\u00e9minin winner Alexia Putellas, in a conference designed to create \u201can institutional yet independent voice of experience and expertise\u201d on subjects including\u00a0player welfare. <\/p>\n
The board for women\u2019s soccer was\u00a0meeting for the first time since being created earlier this year. <\/p>\n
Rubiales could still face charges for his actions at the Women\u2019s World Cup final, and on Monday, Spain\u2019s National Court admitted the complaint made against him by Spanish prosecutors\u00a0for \u201cthe crimes of sexual assault and coercion.\u201d <\/p>\n
The admittance of the\u00a0prosecutor\u2019s complaint\u00a0\u2013 part of the Spanish legal process \u2013 allows the court to begin gathering evidence, which it said involves requesting videos of the incident from news outlets. <\/p>\n\n
