In the spring, the FAA asked airlines to dial back summer flights by 10% at airports such as Newark, John F.\u00a0Kennedy and LaGuardia.\u00a0Last month, the FAA extended the policy into October. <\/p>\n
JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said that more advance warning\u00a0about the FAA\u2019s plans\u00a0would help the airline shift its resources to operate at other airports. He also said a reduction of 10% might not be enough. <\/p>\n
Peter Ingram, CEO\u00a0of Hawaiian Airlines,\u00a0said better technology would improve air traffic controller services, but first the agency must \u201cstaff for the technology we have today.\u201d <\/p>\n
Hayes and United Airlines\u2019 Scott Kirby both said the controller shortage is especially evident when airlines try to recover from weather disruptions. <\/p>\n

The FAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its staffing levels and the executives\u2019 concerns. <\/p>\n
Robert Isom, who runs American Airlines, said the system needs more than\u00a0just the\u00a0airlines dialing back flying. <\/p>\n
