Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin \u2013 the Russian mercenary leader whose plane crashed weeks after he led a mutiny against Moscow\u2019s military leadership \u2013 shows what happens when people make deals with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you want to have a compromise or a dialogue with somebody, you cannot do it with a liar,\u201d Volodymyr Zelensky said. <\/p>\n
He said when Putin understood that a big part of society supported Prigozhin, \u201che killed him. But before he killed, he gave him promises, the territory of Belorussia (Belarus), gave him new locations, the Africa issues and businesses, a lot of different things.\u201d <\/p>\n
The Wagner leader\u2019s dramatic death, which followed a short-lived rebellion that threatened the authority of the Russian president, was a warning to be heeded, Zelensky suggested. <\/p>\n
While the United States and other key Ukrainian allies continue to supply weapons to Kyiv, and stress that conditions to pursue a \u201cjust and durable\u201d peace are not yet in place, a handful of world leaders, such as Brazil\u2019s Lula Da Silva, have put the onus on Ukraine to end the war. <\/p>\n
As evidence for his position, Zelensky cited other countries which have been attacked by Russian soldiers and continue to be partially occupied by them. <\/p>\n
\u201cDid you see any compromise from Putin on other issues? With Georgia? With Moldova?\u201d Zelensky asked rhetorically. <\/p>\n
Ukraine has made incremental gains in the south amid fierce fighting with Russian troops, accounts from the front lines suggest. <\/p>\n
Geolocated videos on Friday showed a wasteland of shell holes, abandoned trenches and wrecked military hardware in the area between Robotyne, Verbove and Novoprokopivka \u2014 a triangle of villages that hold the key for Ukrainians to getting closer to Tokmak, an important hub for Russian defenses. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe result we need, we have to get our land,\u201d said Zelensky. \u201cAnd it\u2019s also not about the land, it\u2019s about the people because the frozen war is not the peace.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cPutin \u2013 he wants to take all our country, to destroy all our families, houses. Because if\u2014 he understands \u2014 why he destroy? He understands that Ukraine will never go back, go away from our land. We\u2019ll never do it. That\u2019s why he has to kill us,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
He added that his children are in Ukraine and that they are \u201cvery Ukrainian\u201d and he is \u201chappy\u201d they are there, before going on to suggest he looks at the future of Ukraine optimistically. <\/p>\n
Zelensky contrasted the youthful energy of his wife and children with his own aging: \u201cThis generation will make Ukraine, I think, great because they \u2014 they are very strong with all their positions, with all their values, with all \u2014 you know, they\u2019re very free. And I\u2019m so happy. Then I \u2014 look, like I said, I\u2019m looking into the mirror. I see another person, older,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy wife\u2026 She\u2019s nice. She\u2019s so strong. She\u2019s \u2014 day by day, she is stronger and nicer and younger. She has a lot of energy,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n
