{"id":9509,"date":"2023-10-02T01:51:22","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T01:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/02\/pro-china-candidate-mohamed-muizzu-wins-maldives-presidential-vote\/"},"modified":"2023-10-02T01:51:22","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T01:51:22","slug":"pro-china-candidate-mohamed-muizzu-wins-maldives-presidential-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareperformanceinsight.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/02\/pro-china-candidate-mohamed-muizzu-wins-maldives-presidential-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-China candidate Mohamed Muizzu wins Maldives presidential vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Opposition candidate Mohamed Muizzu has won the Maldives presidential election, beating incumbent President Ibrahim Solih in a second-round runoff that could herald a pro-China shift for the Indian Ocean archipelago from traditional partner India.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      With nearly all votes counted, the Elections Commission of the Maldives said on its website that Muizzu had received 54% of the ballots in Saturday\u2019s vote, with 46% for Solih.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      About 85% of 282,000 eligible voters in the Maldives, known for its pristine beaches and high-end resorts, turned up at more than 586 polling stations across 187 islands.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      \u201cI congratulate Muizzu for winning the election and thank the people for their exemplary democratic spirit,\u201d Solih said on X, formerly known as Twitter.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Solih, who championed an \u201cIndia First\u201d policy during his time in power, will remain as president until Muizzu\u2019s inauguration on Nov. 17.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      The coalition backing Muizzu has supported Chinese loans and investment projects in the past.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\">      Former President Abdulla Yameen, who has close links to Muizzu, is serving an 11-year prison term for corruption and money laundering.
